Chapter 10 | ❝ Simple. People are idiots. ❞

Monday, September 17th, 2018 - 8:26 a.m.

ZACH SLID INTO his desk chair with a tired yawn. AP Biology, also known as his first block, would always be one of his most difficult classes. Zach loved to sleep, and when he woke up early, it was difficult for him to be wide awake by eight thirty a.m.. He brushed his long black bangs out of his eyes, determining he needed a haircut sometime soon.

He flipped the lid of his laptop open and set it in front of him. Zach set his fingers on the keys in order to get adjusted to the feel as he did prior to each class. The eleven inch laptop was his best friend. It let Zach take notes effectively, gave him something to do during class, and it provided needed assistance for him to complete his homework with excellence and keep his grades up.

Another person took the seat next to Zach's near the classroom door. The thud of their backpack next to their desk almost startled Zach out of his skin, but he chose not to ask about it. He knew exactly who such a person was since it was routine. He would enter the classroom almost exactly two minutes before the bell rang, drop his backpack and have it make a sound as loud as humanly possible, and make plenty of noise until Mrs. Atwood made her arrival.

The familiar voice of Harper confirmed Zach's rather obvious theory. "Hey, Zach!"

"Hey, Harper," Zach replied without taking his unseeing eyes off of his laptop screen. He was continuing to get himself adjusted before class began.

The boy with sandy hair seemed to be in a good mood as usual. "Can I show you something?" he asked him before realizing his poor choice of words. "Oops, forget I said that, sorry. I don't want to offend or anything. Can I tell you something?"

"You wouldn't offend me by saying that, Harper," Zach chuckled a bit. "Of course you can tell - or try to show - me something. Go ahead."

Harper beamed and placed a sheet of cardstock paper on Zach's desk. "I put something on your keyboard and was wondering if you'd be able to read it," he explained due to Zach's quizzical expression when nothing was said.

"Read it?" Zach questioned before picking up the piece of paper. "How am I supposed to—wait, is this braille?" he asked as he instinctively ran his finger over it.

"Yeah, it is. Can you read it?" Harper appeared to be excited from his tone by itself.

"Let me see-—no pun intended," Zach joked on his own condition as he began to thoroughly read the braille on the paper. "Hi, my name is Harper and this is my attempt at writing braille. I hope you can read it......is that a smiley face?"

Harper was unable to suppress his small laugh. "I wasn't sure how to do a smiley face in braille and no websites said anything about braille emojis, so I kinda winged it."
