Chapter 5 | ❝ Definitely. It's a date. ❞
Saturday, September 8th, 2018 - 4:40 p.m.
THE PARTY CONTINUED on as if nothing happened. In truth, nothing else occurred which was worthy of conversation. As soon as Zach was fully recovered and in the company of his new friend, Harper, everything quickly transitioned back to normal. Kelsey returned to the group with her friends and chose to keep silent about Jaylen's actions until afterwards while Zach had a conversation with the person who, for lack of better words, saved him.
Zach discovered the situation with Harper's name and his mother to be quite hilarious, so he ended up telling Harper the whole story. It was quite coincidental, but Zach's small fib worked out for the best. Of course, lies were not the way to go to solve every problem, but on occasion, it was the best thing to do in a teenager's view. Zach had found a new friend after all.
When four o'clock came around, or three hours after the party had begun, Harper offered to give Zach a ride home. A call to his mother with a worried lecture from her later, Zach found himself seated in Harper's car and then taken back home. He was lucky that his clothes dried off in the sun so suspicions from his mom would not rise. In fact, Mrs. West was more intrigued by meeting Zach's new friend, Harper, when he stopped by.
At that moment, Zach realized he had never been embarrassed by his mother before. She spoke about several instances and her concern for her son attending public school. Luckily, Harper was quite understanding and assured her multiple times that he would be completely alright with someone by his side.
The two friends promised to meet each other at school for lunch the next Monday as well as the class they shared: AP Biology. Zach decided to share his extensive notes with Harper in exchange for help navigating from his first block class to second block in order to avoid Jaylen.
It was more of a genuine offer than a deal between the two. Zach expressed his newly found fear of Jaylen to Harper in the midst of the drive to 43 Huntington Avenue. A near-death experience never brought the protagonist and antagonist of the event closer together, but rather forced further apart from the victim's afraid perspective.
Zach was safe from further physical and mental damage at that moment, but Jaylen was far from being protected from the serious talk Kelsey mentioned a few hours ago.
Returning to the Davis' household, the blonde herself along with her friends were helping to dispose of the leftover trash, food, drinks, and other miscellaneous things left behind by the party. The event itself other than the pool incident was successful, and Kelsey was relieved for no other accidents to occur.
Jaylen appeared to be turning a cold shoulder towards his girlfriend. His petty behavior got in the way of their relationship once again, and there was no way he would let Kelsey's love disappear completely. He glared at his leather jacket, which was left to dry hanging on the back deck railing. He believed Zach was to blame for his damaged belongings even if Harper was the one who shoved him in the pool in the first place. In Jaylen's mind, nothing would have happened if it were not for Zach.
