Chapter Six

The rest of the weekend dragged on slowly. Heat waves radiated off the fiery summer sun like laser beams and scorched all life beneath it, including me. Most of my time was spent lounging around the poolside, absorbing the sun's rays and reading a book. Sam came over on Saturday evening after my hectic day and I couldn't help but be a little mad at her for keeping things from me. Luckily, that was all sorted out soon over a tub of ice cream and a movie.

Mum explained a few more things to me about different packs, rogues and finding a mate. A mate was, in case it is not painfully obvious, the person you were destined to be with. And you know it's them when you feel tiny flowers sprouting out of your heart and a cluster of butterflies in your stomach.

She also explained when a full moon rises you feel really energised and powerful. That's your wolf spirit telling you it's time to transform. My wolf had only recently awoken and a full moon was due in a few nights time, so it was then the wolf inside of me would take her true form.

It was Sunday night, I lay awake on my bed while a waxing moon dangled in the blackened sky. Shining brightly, alone on the dark night. I sat up and stared out at the forest just visible over the tops of the houses. My wolf stirred inside me and it almost felt like the forest was beckoning me with with invisible spidery arms. Swinging my legs over the side of my bed I got up and put on a warm jacket.

I slipped down the stairs and made my way through the darkened hallway. I opened the front door and a sliver of cold air wrapped itself around me, curling its icy cold tendrils my body. For some reason this thrilled me and adrenalin coursed within my veins as I walked down the driveway and onto the street. The dull glow of the streetlights was nothing compared to the evanescent radiance of the luminous moon that led my way.

My bare feet slapped the cold pavement as I continued down the street. I reached the edge of the forest and from there on my feet seemed to guide my way, like they had a mind of their own. I wasn't going to the clearing I usually went to, I was going the way I felt was right. Climbing over a mossy log, I let the smell of the atmosphere envelop me and fill me up. As I pushed through low hanging pine branches I couldn't help but become awestruck at the sight before me.

A pristine, aqua blue lake stretched out in front of me and silver moonbeams danced on the rippling surface. I stepped onto the lush green grass which lengthened out to bank of the lake. It sunk like plush carpet beneath my toes. I ran around for a while feeling the stress of everyday life melt away before I collapsed onto the awaiting ground.

Placing my hands behind my head I stared up into the black abyss of night's sky. The stars had now appeared and dotted the sky like little glowing orbs.

Suddenly I felt like I was no longer alone, like I could sense presence of another. I turned around to see a pair of lucid amber eyes blinking at me. When the owner of these captivating eyes stepped out from the trees I was shocked to see that it was the wolf from the morning before.

Much to my surprise I wasn't scared, but rather intrigued and I got up and took a step towards it. It slowly took a few steps closer until we were only whispering distance apart. We stared into each other's eyes for a while before it inched closer and nudged my arm with its head. Slowly I lifted up my hand to touch its soft grey fur.

Sitting back down on the grass I patted the ground next to me and the wolf lay down. I lent on the wolf's warm stomach, feeling it stiffen, then relax. It turned its head towards me resting it on the grass. I reached over to pat it. For some reason I felt safer than I ever had before. I liked the calm rising and falling of the wolf's stomach, the way a aura of safety surrounded us. All of my body, my bone and muscles, were filled with a peaceful, cozy feeling as I finally let sleep take me.

When I awoke, the wolf was gone.
