Chapter eighteen

Everyone stared at Marcus for a few seconds, shocked at his sudden outburst. It was like time had stopped completely and a heavy silence lingered in the air before Alpha Michael finally snapped out of it.

"Marcus, you should know that we can't just jump straight into something like this. We have to find out more about the pack that is trying to take Avalon," Alpha Michael explained gesturing for Marcus to sit down .

A low growl erupted from Marcus' chest before he suppressed it and calmed himself.

"I know but we have to act swiftly," Marcus protested looking around the table, "If anything happens to Avalon or her mother, it will be on our heads."

"I agree with Marcus," a dark haired lady called out from across the table

"okay everyone this meeting is adjourned," Alpha Michael said, "Carmen will see you out."

Marcus' mum got up and ushered everyone to the door. I made to get up but Marcus grabbed my arm and gestured for me to sit back down.

"Avalon, we are going to need your help if we are going to be able to beat this pack," Alpha Michael explained, staring at me with a stern expression on his face, "But we also need to be cautious, the safety of your mother relies on it."

Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes as the memories of my mum came flooding back to me.

"Yes alpha," I replied as I blinked back the tears.

"No need to be so formal, Avalon, you're family now," he said, placing his hand gently on my shoulder and rubbing it in a friendly gesture.

"On a less disheartening note," Michel began, "I was hoping to have a whole pack gathering tonight at seven. After all, it's probably a good idea that the members of the Ivory valley pack to meet their future Luna, correct?" he said looking to me for confirmation of his request.

I was left in a momentary state of shock at that daunting prospect before I dragged myself back to reality and nodded vigorously in response.

"Perfect, I'll see you again at seven this evening," he stated before he walked out, leaving me and Marcus alone in the meeting room.

The rhythmic sound of a ticking clock cut through the comfortable silence, reverberating throughout the room. We didn't look at each other for fear of what would happen if we did, but rather both stared blankly at the wall opposite us, contemplating our ominous fate.

I rested head down on his chest, comforting myself in hearing the soft beating if his heart as it echoed throughout his body. The soft pads on his fingers lightly teased the surface of my hair and lulled me into a calm state of mine.

"I just want you to know that I love you," he whispered as he lifted my chin up and brushed a stray tendril of hair off my face.

"And no matter what, I will never let them hurt you," he said as he laced his fingers between mine and rubbed his thumb along the top of my hand. I let my eyes flutter close and pressed a gentle kiss on his lips. My hand cupped the back of his head as our lips moved in synch and our souls interweaved with each others, before I pulled away and let us share this one moment together as one. With our fingers intertwined and our heads held high we both conjured up the little confidence we had stepped outside, ready to face the uncertain future that lay ahead of us.

A few hours and a shopping trip with Carmen later I found myself back at Marcus' house engulfed in a sea of unfamiliar faces.
