Chapter Five

I hurriedly slammed the front door behind me and pressed my back against it. I knew what that creature was, a werewolf. If I was ever to feel safe again in this town I needed to find out more about who, or what I really was.

So I took a deep breath and walked down the empty hallway and up the stairs. As I reached the top I noticed that my bedroom light was on and the door was almost closed, but not quite. I snuck up beside it and sure enough there was my mum sitting on the bed with the man from before. They were talking fairly quietly but surprisingly I could hear them.

"I knew that she would react like this," Mum said to the man, "I only wish I could have told her sooner, I'm one of the few people she trusts"

"Jill, you have to understand that it's pack regulation, you couldn't have told her even if you wanted too. She'll come around eventually, they all do."

"Yes Alpha." My mum replied looking defeated and worn out. I felt sorry for her, I had been a bit harsh, and she was only doing what she had to do. But wait, Alpha?! What the hell is an Alpha?

"Anyway, I'd better be heading off, duty calls," The man said before grabbing his jacket and heading towards the door. Crap! They'd know I was eaves dropping if I stayed there, I hurried over to the staircase and pretended I had just walked up them. The door swung open and out came the man. I tried to act natural as he walked over.

"Good morning Avalon,' he said nodding towards me and proceeding down the stairs.

I gave him a quick last look before swallowing my pride and shuffling slowly towards my bedroom door. I knocked once before stepping in. Before my mum could say anything I put my hand up to stop her.

"I'm sorry," I announced and as I said so I watched her relax a little, "But I haven't completely forgiven you and it might take you a while to regain my trust."

"I know," she replied as I sat down on my bed to talk to her, "just let me explain some things to you.

"Ok," I said, "I have a few things I would like to know about too, but to start off just tell me the basics."

"First things first, as you probably already know, werewolves can change from human to wolf and vice versa, but only with emotional triggers and at full moon. The moon goddess, Selene, is our heavenly mother and creator of all werewolves. She designed us shifters to have heightened senses such as improved hearing, vision and strength. You can't speak to your wolf, but you can feel her and her emotions."

"But what about the voices in my head? If they're not my wolf spirit, what are they?" I questioned, suddenly worried that my recently acquired talent was an abnormality.

"Voices?" she asked,

"Werewolves aren't meant to hear voices...Unless," she puzzled. Suddenly her face lit up as she seemed to realise something.

"You're one of the gifted," she gasped, staring at me with an awestruck expression planted on her face.

"What do you mean by gifted?" I worried, with uneasiness in my voice. I felt like I barely knew myself any more.

"Every year a few werewolves are born with special gifts such as yours. This is merely the beginning of something wonderful, dear," she said, grasping my hands between hers.

"Come on!" she exclaimed pulling me to my feet, "We have to go and tell the Alpha."

"Wait," I said, pulling her to a stop, "I think I can hear certain things though, and they don't make any sense. It's like I'm listening in on a thousand conversations at once."
