Chapter twenty three
I froze and my heart skipped a beat after Kyle said he knew I was there.
It was almost as if I had found a missing puzzle piece and the jumbled thoughts in my mind began to connect.
Kyle exchanged a glance with Hunter before they burst into their wolves and sprinted off into the forest.
The army of wolves came charging towards me.
I closed my eyes and focused on the alpha's office and to my relief I felt my soul travel back to my body.
My eyes flew open as my soul entered my body. I looked around and saw the alpha staring at me worriedly.
"Avalon thank the godess your here, you were gone for an hour and we thought you couldn't get back." he said
I stared at him for a few painful seconds before I found my voice again.
"They knew. All along," I said quietly. My voice sounded hoarse, like it wasn't mine at all.
"Knew what Avalon?" Michael asked
"Kyle, it was him all along, he knew I was there."
I started to get angry as I realized what had happened.
"Hunter... He only gave away the information he wanted us to know. We fell perfectly into his trap. I can't believe I didn't realize this earlier." I cried
I dipped my head and my hair fell over my face.
"We're going to lose." I whispered.
They stared at me in utter disbelief before the alpha spoke.
"Not necessarily Avalon, when are they going to attack?"
"Today." I stated.

The next few minutes passed in a blur. It was like I was frozen in time, trapped in a waking nightmare.
People passed me, traveling in slow motion while I sat. On my stool. Silently.
It was like they couldn't see me at all.
The door shut behind them and I was left sitting there, just sitting. All alone.
'This is all my fault' I thought. 'If I had never been born none of this would have ever happened'
A lonely tear slid down my cheek. My life was falling apart at the seams.

Marcus' POV
"Marcus I need you at the house now!!!" my dad called out from across the field.
I told the wolves to keep fighting while I was gone, before I ran towards back towards the house.
As I got closer I began to take in his panicked expression ad I immediately knew something big was up. I don't think I've seen his looking do stressed, not even when a pack of rogues crossed our territory.
"what's up?" I asked when I got to the back porch.
"It's Hunter, he's going to attack today."
"What!?!" I shouted, "We're not ready for them yet!
My dad stood there shaking his head in despair.
"He'll be here in a few hours."
I stood there completely stunned at what he had just said. Panic started rising as realization set in.
"What about the others?" I said
"Simon is gathering all of the women and children to put them in the safe house, and Dominique is rounding up all of the fighter wolves we have."
I looked around and started to panic when I realized something.
"Where's Avalon?" I asked
He looked around him and turned back to me with a confused expression on his face.
"I thought she was following, we just came from my office."
Without a second thought I sprinted off through the house and flung open the office door.
My heart broke when I saw her.
She looking completely lifeless, like she was in another place.
I walked up to her and as I got closer I saw that her face was blank.
I placed a hand on her shoulder and she turned around to look at me. He face lit up a bit and a flicker of smile crossed her face.
"Come on baby we have to go," I said as I guided her to the door.
I knew where I had to take her but i couldn't tell her.
I led her down the corridor and down the steps where we were met with two other men.
We continued walking until we stopped where the cells were. She looked up in confusion and her brow knitted together.
"Marcus, where are we?" she asked.
I scratched the back of my head and looked around guiltily.
"Avalon I'm sorry that I had to take you here but it's for your own good." I replied as I signaled to the two guys.
They advanced towards her and grabbed her by the arms.
I saw the panic in her eyes as we rounded the corner and she saw the cells.
She immediately began thrashing around and trying to pull away from the men.
They tightened their grip and I opened a cell door for them. They quickly pushed her in and locked the door.
"Marcus!" she cried as she stuck her hand through the bars and reached out to me, "Don't leave me here alone!!"
I turned head away from her, afraid that if I stared at her long enough I would give into her pleas.
"It's for your own good," I said, more to reassure myself that I was making the right decision than comfort Lucy.
"Marcus please!! Don't leave me!" Avalon howled as I saw her wolf begin to surface.
I turned to face her wanting nothing more than to run away with her and escape this madness. But in my heart I knew I couldn't, I was this soon to be this packs alpha and i will fight to defend what will be mine.
"I'm truly sorry, but I promise you I will come back alive." I said. I took one last look at her before I tore my eyes away and literally used every ounce of willpower I had to turn around and walk away.
As I rounded the corner I peeked over and saw Lucy who collapsed on the concrete floor, shaking, as she cried silently to herself.
Even though I had promised I would be reunited with my mate, I think we both knew that this could be the last time we saw each other, and there nothing we could do about it.
