"Tell me something, why did you abscond from the hospital?" Sharma wondered
"Abscond? I was with the Home Secretary and her daughter. Government officials arrive. I was ordered to give them privacy"
"You just walked out. You didn't go back to your unit or provide a statement. Louise had to track you down."
"It wasn't hard was it? I went home and excuse me if I need some times to come to term with the fact that both of my principals had been involved in a explosion."
"Why not insist the inquiry, the inquiry into an act of terror that harmed your two principals and perpetrated by someone you were the last police officer to be in close contact with." David held back his emotion
"David is there something your not telling us regarding he state of your mind before, during or after the attack?" He looked at DS Rayburn
"No." he replied
"Right, well. We're still searching your flat, do you have anywhere else you can stay for the time being?"
"Yes." He called Vicky telling her that he would be coming over, Rayburn dropped him off at the safe house. Vicky let him in and they talked for a bit before she went to bed. David didn't go to sleep, he took the his flats keys out of Vicky's bag and went back to the hospital.
"I'm the Home Secretary's and her daughter Principal protection officer, is there any news?" A woman who was walking down spoke.
"I'll take it from here." she took David to one side.
"The Home Secretary is still in theatre and Mrs montage-Jones is still comatose. I can take your number and call if there is any updates."
"I'll wait...in fact can I see Mrs Jones, I just want to check up on her." the woman hesitated but complied and took him to her room. No one was in there at the moment. Mia was laid out on the hospital bed wired up to different kinds of machines. He walked in and looked back the woman had gone. He made his way further.
"Mia?" he took her hand "Mia, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean for any of this to happen. I was supposed to protect you, I promised I would. Not just you but your mother as well, now your here and your mothers in surgery." tears rolled down his cheeks.
"I bet you wished you hadn't met me, everything seems to be going wrong since I entered the picture. I wouldn't blame you if you woke up and never wanted to see me again. but please you have to wake up." Nothing happened. He kissed her hand.
"Look, I don't think I can get away with staying in here much longer, but I'll be in the waiting room, waiting to hear about you or...Julia." he kissed her head and went to the waiting room. He watched the news that was dominated by the St Matthews attack, it turned into hours meanwhile the powers that be gathered to discuss the events that have happened.
------
It was morning now. Roger Penhiligon arrived with Mrs Montague (Julia's mother and Mia's grandmother for a update.
"What are you still doing here?" he sneered upon seeing David "you had a job and you failed it." he looked back to his former mother in law and apologised as the went to talk to the Doctors. David watched as the bad news was delivered that Julia did not survive. David put his fist to his moth to control his reaction, he then made his way back to Mia's room, entered and kissed her forehead.
"I love you." he whispered and then left. He made his way back home, what he didn't know that upon his leaving, Mia's heartbeat picked up, her vital signs raised.
She. Woke. Up.
