Zephyr tapped the window until I opened it. He flew in and landed on the chair. Zephyr squawked and flapped his feathers.
"Alright, alright!" I grunted as I untied the paper and other letters from Zephyr. I felt a hand ruffle my hair.
"Morning, bud." He grinned down at me. I gave a small grin and opened the paper. Professor Dumbledore's photo was on the front page and I read the title. I sighed sadly and held back tears as I folded the paper and went to get dressed. I put on light blue ripped jeans and a grey hoodie. Just as I was about to leave the motel, I was pulled into the next room. Dad was grinning like a fool as we each sat on the beds.
"Your father and I have something to discuss." Mother told us. Alexis and David started to object but they were ignored as Mother continued.
" We understand that you have found some local friends with whom to spend," there was a pause, "Time with." David ran an exasperated hand over his face. I silently laughed.
"I can't deal with this right now," Alexis told Mother. They said that that was okay. Dad spoke next.
"But we do have to be careful with our hearts and our parts." He sent a suggestive look at David. I couldn't take it and started to laugh very hard. Alexis pulled me up from the floor.
"Stop laughing!" She hissed in my ear.
"I c-c-can't help it!" I gestured to them, "They suck at these talks!" I shut up when I was sent a glare. They turned back to David, who was wishing the bed would cave in. They resumed the conversation.
"Because a Podunk baby out of wedlock is not something your father and I can afford to negotiate at this moment." Mother said. I shifted slightly. David looked at me and smirked discreetly.
"Well, that's crazy because all I want to negotiate right now is some Podunk baby out of wedlock! So-" Dad started laughing and pointed at David. Alexis told them in the kindest way possible to get a life. I couldn't take it anymore and walked out of the room briskly. The letters sat unopened on the table with the folded newspaper. I opened the one with Hermione's neat scrawl on it.
Evy,
Sixth year has been quite the journey. Harry thought Draco was a Death Eater and apparently was right. I missed having you to talk to, letters really aren't doing us any justice. Anyway, Slughorn had some club that Harry and I were in and I ended up taking Cormac McLaggen as my date! Yuck! Ron ended up trying out for the Keeper position on the Gryffindor Quidditch Team and getting in. I learned how to do wand-less magic now! Those lessons helped. The first time I used it was at the tryouts. McLaggen was doing better than Ron. Now, McLaggen may be a better player but he is smug, VERY smug. So I charmed the broom while Cormac was up.
On a more solemn note, Dumbledore's dead. Draco let the Death Eater's in and Snape cast the Killing Curse. We found his body at the bottom of the Astronomy Tower. Harry made the decision that we were going to hunt for your uncle's Horcruxes. I miss you.
Love,
Hermione.
I smiled and placed the letter on the table. I moved and opened each letter. It was just a bunch of other letters from the Ministries. My parents entered the room baffled. Dad saw the letter from Hermione and picked it up. I lunged at him and swiped the letter. He raised an eyebrow at me and crossed his arms.
"When are we going to meet this girl? I've seen her once and that's just about it." Dad gave me a pointed look. I rolled my eyes and put everything in my trunk. As I walked around the door, I looked over my shoulder.
"See ya, losers!" I called as I strolled up the road.
