Mark's shift at the pub finally ends - thank god, he was getting sick of all the loud people in there. He'd wanted to go home since he first arrived.
Ever since Haechan said that he was dropping out, Mark hadn't seen him once, even though it's been two weeks since he said that. Mark always walks past Haechan's apartment hoping he'd come out conveniently when Mark is there but he never does.
As Mark trudges home he kicks the small stones on the pavement, trying to make himself less bored. Each one bounces a few times before falling into the road where Mark can't see them. He lifts his head up and peers down the street that was engulfed in blackness. Usually, the night sky made Mark feel more at ease but today it just felt inconvenient.
Mark walks slowly home not focusing on anything in particular. However, something catches Mark's eye and he quickly turns his head. He sees the head of a boy walking around the corner, his hair illuminating under the street lights.
Mark's heart rate races as he chases after him, almost acting on instinct.
Haechan
As Mark gets to the end of the street and turns the corner, the figure is nowhere to be seen. But that doesn't stop him. He continues running around the corner and taking a route that he thinks Haechan may have taken.
He smiled as he sees the boy at the end of one of the small side streets, completely oblivious that Mark is there.
"Haechan!" Mark calls out to the figure.
The boy turns around and holds his hands above his eyes and squints them, trying to see Mark more clearly. It isn't until Mark is underneath a street light that the boy realises who it is.
"Mark..." Haechan mutters under his breath. He tries to run away but Mark was already too close and catches up to him.
"Haechan! Stop running away from me! Talk to me please!" Mark stands in front of Haechan, blocking him from leaving.
"I-, uh-," Haechan stutters avoiding Mark's eyes.
"Haechan please," Mark begs, catching his breath in between words, "at least tell me what I've done wrong."
"I-, I cant."
"Why can't you!?" Mark holds onto Haechans shoulders. "Haechan please look at me."
Haechan slowly looks up and into Mark's eyes. When their eyes connect, it feels like a year has passed and Haechan can notice the pain, sorrow, and worry in Mark's eyes.
"Haechan, please. Tell me what's up."
Haechan continues looking into Mark's eyes. He notices how softly Mark spoke to him and how genuine he looks at him. He felt like an asshole treating Mark like this. Mark was the first person who had treated Haechan so kindly and it made him feel so guilty.
Haechan's eyes begin to fill as he continues looking into Mark's gentle doe eyes. All of a sudden he can't hold it in anymore and bursts out crying, tears streaming down his face.
He throws himself around Mark, the two engulfed in the warmest hug ever. Mark's happy, he feels like this is a sign that Haechan won't leave. But it's the opposite for Haechan. He's sad that this could be the last time he ever sees Mark.
He cries more, melting into Marks shoulder while his tears roll off his face and down Mark's back. "M-Mark, I'm sorry. I just- just can't tell you." Haechan sobs louder.
Mark holds Haechan lovingly, cradling him in his arms. He had never seen him act like this. "It's okay Haechan. We can still keep in touch though can't we? Please?"
Haechan holds Mark tighter as his tears fall heavier and faster. "I'm s-sorry Mark. I'm sorry."
"Oh..." the disappointment was clear in Mark's voice, as he struggled to hold back tears. "C-can I walk you home though??"
Mark moves his hand up to stroke Haechans hair, comforting him more as his sobs continue.
"O-okay..."
The two walk home, Haechan still sniffling the whole way. When they arrive at Haechans house the two say their goodbyes and Haechan opens his door and leaves.
And that's it. Mark didn't think it would be the end of it but it was. Haechan really couldn't ever speak to him again and he didn't know why. He had lost the one person he cared so dearly for.
The realisation hit him when he returned home and was in his bedroom. His heart felt like it had shattered into a million pieces and his breath stopped. He felt lifeless. He couldn't believe that was the last time they'd ever see each other. He just didn't feel okay anymore.
