Kun shook his head. "No, he died because he "broke Rule 1", but it wasn't really him. It was the Firsts."
"The Firsts broke the rule?"
"Not quite. The Firsts took over his body and forced him to destroy all those cities, murder all those people, and wreak havoc everywhere. You know Taeil, why would he ever want to harm the one thing he's protecting?!"
Mark could sense the news was upsetting Haechan, so he gently stroked his thumb, their hands still interlinked.
"I don't know if you ever realised, Donghyuck, but the Firsts despised Moon Taeil for some reason; they had been looking for a way to get rid of him for a long time. They decided they needed to take matters into their own hands if they ever wanted him gone. So they invented the rules, purely so they could punish Moon Taeil when he breaks them. Of course, Taeil wouldn't break them, so they forced him to. Ten ordered one of the other Firsts to take over his body while he was here on Earth."
Haechan felt his heart break in two.
Taeil...
"Taeil had no idea what had happened afterwards- it was like he was blacked out or in a coma-like state the whole time that the First was controlling him. When they forced him back home, Taeil had no idea what they were talking about. They kept accusing him of things that he couldn't recall at all.
"Doyoung and I heard everything from outside the door - Doyoung was only listening because he's a nosy bastard though. Taeil told them they must have got it wrong; he assured them he'd never do anything like this! But they had evidence... To Taeil's surprise, the claims they made... were true. But still, he begged. He pleaded with them, saying it must be a mistake, and he never did anything like that."
Haechan started squeezing Mark's hand more, growing more upset and angry by the second.
"Stop," Haechan said quietly, not looking at Kun, "it- it's not true!"
"The Firsts obviously didn't listen to him. They used this situation to their advantage. They punished him wildly. They tortured Taeil for hours. He begged over and over again for mercy, but they wouldn't grant it."
"STOP I DON'T WANNA HEAR ANYMORE!" Donghyuck covered his ears and shook his head. No no, it's not true. Not to Taeil. Please. Anyone but Taeil...
"Donghyuck, you even came to the door, do you remember? You came to the door, screaming that he couldn't have done it. You got so worked up that your whole body was shaking and was glowing intensely, like you were explosive. I had to move you away, I didn't want you to hear him like that. But you still begged everyone to let you in."
Haechan continued covering his ears tightly and violently squeezed his eyes shut, causing a few tears to roll out and land on the table. Mark didn't know how to help so he just moved his foot onto Haechan's, letting him know he's here for him, to try and comfort him a little.
"You even screamed at me and Doyoung. You begged me to let you in but I couldn't physically do it! Only the Firsts can operate the door. You banged on the door so much, I had to drag you away before Doyoung scolded you massively. While I was dragging you away, you screamed, telling them to take you instead of Taeil."
Mark was surprised at the news and looked at the still distressed Haechan. He never thought he would be willing to risk his own life to save someone else. Taeil must have meant so much to Haechan.
"Even though you were just a Third, you begged the Seconds and Firsts to kill you instead. I really admired your bravery ever since then. It was weird to see a Third so loyal to someone who should be their master. But you didn't care. You kept begging them to take you and leave Taeil alone."
"STOP TALKING! PLEASE!" Haechan shouted, slamming his hands aggressively onto the table. His eyes were stark white and his body began to glow ever so slightly, even though he was in his human form. Tears started to stream down his reddened face as his breathing became more rapid.
Mark was a little scared and worried for Haechan. "Haechan?" Mark said softly, holding onto his jacket and lightly pulling him to sit down again. Haechan's breathing started to slow a bit as he began to calm himself down and sat down.
Haechan looked towards Mark, he looked terrified of him. Haechan instantly forced his eyes back to normal and took Mark's hand. "S-sorry, Mark," Haechan spoke through his sobs, as he converted all his anger into sadness.
"Donghyuck," Kun started. The two boys looked at him. "I know it's hard to hear, but Taeil really was innocent. You were right all along."
Donghyuck broke down, tears streaming down his face, as he threw himself at Mark. He buried his face in his chest, sobbing furiously, his whole body shaking. Mark held him in his arms and tried to reassure him, but didn't know what to say to him. Instead, he just stroked his hair gently, cradling him in his arms.
Mark looked at Kun as he continued holding Haechan, not caring that his favourite shirt was getting soaked with Haechan's tears. "Is it really true, Kun?"
Kun nodded once and hung his head low. "Afraid so. I'm sorry Donghyuck. You deserved the truth more than anyone. No one else knows but Doyoung and me, but Doyoung doesn't give a shit, he always hated Taeil's guts anyways."
"I'll-, I'll," Haechan's muffled and broken voice spoke, his head still on Mark's chest. "I'll get them back for this..."
"No! Donghyuck I forbid you from saying anything about this!"
Haechan lifted himself up to look at Kun.
"Donghyuck," Kun spoke softly, "if you tell them that you know, they'll kill you. I'm not joking with you. Not to mention they will kill me as well for telling you. I forbid you from telling them, you'll have to just hold your tongue around them."
"Bu-but," Haechan sniffed, wiping his eyes with a tissue that Mark had given him.
"Donghyuck! It's an order!"
Donghyuck held his head low, "Okay..."
"Taeil wouldn't want you to confront them, would he?! You can't do it! When are you next expected to go back?"
Haechan had forgotten that the Firsts can call him back at any point and he has no control over it. Not like Kun who can come and go as he pleases.
"In a week or something, I'm- I'm thinking of asking for an extension on my trip."
"Well, when you go back, don't say anything. Got it?!" Hyuck nodded and Kun left the two at the table to process whats just happened.
Haechan broke down again, crying into Mark's arm.
"Taeil~," he sobbed, his voice broken, "I miss you so much~"
