UPDATE 2020

Please excuse this book for any mixed up storyline moments, confusing/inaccurate grammar or vocabulary,  bad character development, etc. I was much younger (and unrealistic) when I wrote this and my writing skills were terrible!

"Will was a good soldier, family member, and friend. He will be missed," a black man spoke.

From looking at the ground, I saw him touch Will's glossy, dark brown coffin. A younger man named Jack Mitchell, and who I knew very well, touched the coffin next. Will's father had already touched the coffin before this, so I got up to touch it.

I'll miss you forever.

"Keona," a low, gentle voice soothed as I started walking back to my car.

"Jack," as I hugged the young man dressed in a blue uniform, I started crying.

"How are you?" he asked as he released me.

"Could be better," I admitted, rubbing my eye. "How's your arm?"

Will, the black man named Cormack, and Jack had been on a mission in Korea. When Will and Jack went to plant explosives, supposedly Will's arm had gotten stuck and been broken. Right as Will had pushed Jack away, the helicopter had exploded-killing Will. Cormack got to Jack, but at a price...he had lost his left arm from his elbow down from exploding debris.

"Missing," Jack goofed and I only smiled slightly. "It's still numb."

"Jack Mitchell?" Jonathan Irons, Will's father, came up to where Cormack, Jack, and I stood.

"That's me," Jack blinked.

"I'm sorry for the loss of your best friend and my son," Jonathan patted Jack's shoulder. "I'm here to offer you a second chance."

I thought Cormack started to say something, but he was interrupted by Jonathan Irons.

"The corporation Atlas could use stronger soldiers, like you. When you decide," Jonathan held out a card to Jack, "call me."

"I will," Jack took the card.

Jonathan turned to me suddenly and I jumped at his sudden movement. Feeling his hands on my shoulders, I looked down in sadness once again.

"I'm sorry for your pain," Jonathan started.

"Don't be," I was such a hard-ass sometimes. "Is there something a woman can do at Atlas?"

"Um," Jonathan scoffed. "I don't think you're really fit for the job, Keona."

"I've been working out, I'm-

"Not that kind of 'shape'. You need mental training just like any other military force."

"I can do it!" I was also as stubborn as hell.

"I will not allow you to join," Jonathan Irons announced, narrowing his gaze.

As the rich-looking man turned away to leave, I slumped my shoulders and pouted, letting out a "hmpf."

Jack's hand on my shoulder made me frown more.

"Let it go, Keona," Jack almost suggested.

"I won't!" I crossed my arms. "I'm coming to visit you in one week!"

I stormed off before Jack could do or say anything else.

Will would have been disappointed in my childish behavior, but I didn't care. I felt as if joining Atlas was the only way for my broken heart to be healed.

Besides....

I was Will Irons girlfriend and nobody told me no.
