It was rising up now. Coming to the top to pour out of my mouth and ruin everything I had worked for. I felt my stomach twist in all sorts of directions, making me feel even worse than I did. I felt dizzy, as if I was going a hundred miles an hour on a marry-go-round.
"Relax a little bit, Keo," Mitchell murmured next to me. "You have to be able to breathe to fight."
"Okay," I breathed in and out multiple times to try to calm myself.
I wanted to puke, go home, and wish this all never happened. I wanted to go and cuddle up next to Will, watching movies with him all day long. Then I wanted to go out to dinner with him, talking to him about everything in the entire universe that you could think of talking about. And when we were done with dinner, I wanted to go back home and kiss his lips off....show him how much I loved him, how much I still loved him.
But William Irons was dead, gone. And I needed to move on from that. Heal from my scars.
"We proceed on foot from here," Gideon was telling Joker, Mitchell, and I while pointing at a digital map sitting on a crate.
Even though Irons hadn't said that Joker was coming along, I was glad to have him with us. It was just another person who liked me and could stand being around me, unlike Gideon.
"Keona," Gideon caught my attention. I looked at him, but not at his eyes. "You're going to plant mute charges once we make it to that rooftop," he pointed.
Dipping my head, I felt my Exo suit shift with me. It was weird having it attached to your back, legs, and arms, but I ignored the weirdness knowing it was helping keep me alive. I, in fact, ignored everything and focused solely on what I had been assigned to do.
"Got eyes on target," Mitchell said and continued to look through the windows of the building in front of us with digital goggles.
Making the vision of the goggles appear on the map, Gideon watched the private meeting taking place in a room of the building a ways from us. Even though I tried not to, my gaze shifted to look at him. He wore a black beanie and, of course, his uniform with his Exo suit. Instead of long sleeves, like mine, Gideon's uniform sleeves were rolled up to his elbows.
A flash of blue told me Gideon had looked over at me and I quickly looked at the screen, trying to hide my slight blush. From the corner of my eye, I saw Gideon shake his head and watch the screen again.
I had missed the conversation between the man we were after- Hades- and the military general, because suddenly the white man was shot...by Hades.
"We need to get in there!" Gideon commanded. "Now!"
I felt my heart jump as we started jogging across the bridge and jumped down from it.
Keep it together, Keo!
I scolded myself and shook my head, continuing along with Mitchell.
"Climb the wall," Gideon spoke to us all and I made my gloves turn on.
"Ladies first," Mitchell smiled slightly and I stuck my tongue out at him.
Gideon and Joker had already started climbing so I began after them, my gloves easily attaching to the wall. After climbing the wall a little bit, I heard Mitchell follow me.
"Take an arm lass," Gideon's voice made me look up the wall.
His hand was offering help to get up over the edge of the wall. Clutching his hand firmly, I pushed myself up while he pulled me up easily.
"Thanks," I muttered.
"Mitchell, get those mute charges placed," Gideon acted like he hadn't heard me.
