OCTOBER 20, 1977
Lily, Aurora, Alice and Marlene walked the busy halls to the great hall together. Only a few minutes earlier those of the group who hadn't taken their apparition test in the summer, meaning Aurora, had all just passed.
"I really thought I wasn't going to be able to do it for a second, the apparition coach kept looking at me funny, I swear I almost apparated just to get away from that old bat" Marlene joked.
"You still did it though, all of you, I'm so proud" Aurora beamed putting her arms around Lily and Marlene who stood on either side of her
"Are you going to tell us how you happen to stumble upon taking the test back in July?" Alice asked.
"I will" Alice gave her an untrusting look that made her feel guilty, "I will! I promise I will, just not right now, I swear"
"mhmm" Alice rolled her eyes with a smile so the girls would know she wasn't actually mad.
"you know what I've noticed" they turned their heads, giving Lily their full attention as they continued to stroll the hall, "This is the first time all of us have been in a relationship at the same time. I mean look, Alice is in it deep with Frank, Marlene has finally admitted to dating Dorcas, James and I are together and Auroras with Remus"
"Woah Woah Woah, I'm not dating Remus" she stopped in her tracks. The girls looked at each other collectively rolling their eyes.
"Rory, you two have both made it very clear you like each other, you flirt constantly, you even broke up with Sirius FOR HIM... you guys are in a relationship whether you believe it or not"
"Lily how is it you know more about my love life than I know about my own"
"Because you're my best friend, it's my duty"
"right" she smiled.
On the way to the great hall, Aurora's mind kept racing. She questioned in her head, 'are we in a relationship? I know our feelings for each other aren't exactly private but I mean come on, we only kissed once in the shrieking shack but then again there was the time behind the bookshelf in the library and one of the marauders secret passageways, and in the abandoned bathroom on the seventh floor, though Lily didn't know about the last couple times'
They walked through the great hall doors and immediately felt the happy energy drain from their bodies. They literally looked out at the students who sat with serious expressions and hushed whispers.
"Did we do something?" Marlene asked gazing over the Gryffindor table to find her curly-haired girlfriend.
When she found her, Dorcas stood up halfway from her seat and waved her hand to call us over to sit.
Aurora liked Dorcas, she was funny and kind. She had a good spirit, there wasn't an evil bone in her body. Her golden-brown skin glowed like honey in the sunlight and her tight spiral curls bounced up and down on her shoulders when she walked. She was everything she hoped Marlene would find in love.
Marlene took a seat beside her girlfriend and gave her a short kiss against the cheek. They weren't embarrassed about their sexually or their relationship with each other but it was the 70's after all. Gay relationships were excepted better in the wizarding world than with muggles. Here if you were queer they didn't through you in Azkaban or send death threats, gay relationships were tolerated as long as you weren't public about it.
The girls followed after Marlene, taking a seat at the Gryffindor table. From there they each diverted their separate ways while still staying in speaking distance of each other. Lily and Aurora sat with the boys, Lily basically sitting in James lap and Aurora beside her and Remus. Alice sat next to Marlene and Dorcas on her left and Frank Longbottom to her right.
"What's going on?" Marlene asked, Dorcas, looked at all the girls and ducked her head to speak in a hushed tone,
"Marys missing, everyone is waiting for Dumbledore to tell us what happened"
Mary McDonalds was friend of Dorcas, she's a muggle-born in Gryffindor who the Slytherins often targeted for their petty prejudice crimes.
"Oh," the girls just murmured not know what to say.
"There he is!" Lily point at the headmaster who had just walked into the great hall and stood tall and present against his post, burdened by his sorrow expression. Whispers began to break amongst the crowd of students.
"SILENCE!" he roared.
All eyes were facing him even the Slytherins who didn't really seem to care about what happened to the girl.
"Now. We have a very serious matter on our hands right now, as you may know, there has been some speculation as to the whereabouts of a student, Ms. Mary Mcdonald. Ms. Mcdonald was attacked last night in Hogsmeade by an unidentified group of individuals we believe to me... death eaters"
The whispers resume only louder this time. Marlene had one arm locked with Dorcas and the other stroked her back for comfort. She kept telling her Mary was going to be okay and that, he never said she died. This only soothed Dorcas' tears but didn't stop her from panicking.
To hear that death eaters had been so close to Hogwarts and that they had attacked one of the students made Aurora's heart pound. She couldn't help but think what if that were Lily or Remus or any of the other people she promised herself and Dumbledore she would protect. Remus could sense her worry. He put his hand on top of her own, intertwining their fingers under the table. He held her hand while Albus continued about taking safety precautions more seriously and that we must stick together in difficult times. He continued to hold her hand once he finished and lunch appears. He only then let go when they parted ways in the middle of the corridor as huddles of students quizzed by and they headed to her NEWT potions class and his History of magic class.
