(This is told from Newt's perspective)

I sat in my shed, writing out all the things my creatures need, when the I heard a crash from above. I scrambled up the ladder to find Tina standing the middle of her living room, her wand in hand and extended in front of her, glaring at the broken window. Looking out it, an owl was flying away rather limp. As I turned toward Tina, she began to move about her day as usual, as if hoping I hadn't guessed that she'd thrown an owl through a windowpane.

"Tina? Are you alright?" I asked.

Tina, without looking up, said "What do you mean, Newt? I'm fine."

I gestured toward the window "That owl is hurt, Tina!"

Tina sighed "It doesn't matter. It was Queenie's. If it returns to her injured, I wouldn't mind."

I couldn't believe my ears "What if she came back to you, asking for a second chance, Tina?"

Tina continued moving papers around the room "I wouldn't give her one."

I kicked the carpet slightly "Look, Tina, I know how you-"

"Do not tell me you know how I feel! You haven't ever lost a sibling!"

I felt a wave a sadness rush over me and the image a teenage girl skipped across my eyesight. She had dark brown hair, blue eyes, and a very freckly face. I was now standing in the middle of Tina's living room with tears flooding my eyes and my mouth hanging open. I wanting to speak, but a could feel a lump in my throat that was preventing me from speaking.

I woke up one night to feet running across the floorboards out in the hall.

'What is going on?' I asked myself.

Opening the door just the tiniest bit, I peered out to see my mother rushing to Emily's room with a bowl of hot water and a rag. I followed her. In Emily's room, a doctor was leaning over Emily, who was coughing like there was no tomorrow. She was covered in sweat.

"It's too hot! It's too hot!" she was yelling, squirming under the covers.

"I know, sweetie. I know." my mother said to her.

"Mummy?" I said quietly.

"Newt!" my older brother, Theseus, exclaimed "You can't be in here!"

He pushed me back towards my room. I stomped my foot to the ground.

"Theseus! What's wrong with Emily?!"

Theseus shut my door mostly before saying "Mum and Dad will talk to you later!"

And he shut my door after that. I lay down under my covers and shivered with fear as I listened to Emily screaming out for cold water. It was maybe an hour later, I heard the doorknob turn and my mother walked into the room. Sitting up, I stared at her with tears stinging my eyes.

"What's wrong with Emily, mummy?"

My mother sat beside me on my bed "Emily's very sick, Newt. The doctor is doing all he can."

"I want to see her." I stated.

My mother pushed my bangs out of the way "I'll have to ask Emily, darling."

I stood in the hall outside Emily's door when my mother opened it.

"Go on in, Newt. Emily wants to see you." she said.

I walked into her room. It was still Emily's room, but it didn't papers strewn across the floor like it normally did and in place of her various pens, quills, and pencils; a doctor's bag sat on top of her desk. Emily was not sitting up on her bed, cross-legged with a pad and pencil in her hand. She was lying down in her bed, a sickly yellow tint to her skin.

She looked up at me. Reaching out, she beckoned her over to her. I crawled onto her bed. She played with my hair as she spoke to me.

"Newt. Promise me something."

I looked at her with tears in my eyes "What?"

"Don't stop being you. Ever."

"Why?"

"Newt, promise me." she pleaded.

I nodded slowly. She smiled at me and ruffled my hair. But, she started to get a coughing fit and my father picked me up and carried me into the hall. I tried to walk back into the room, but my father stopped me, saying it wasn't a place for me right now.

I sat on the stairs, looking down on the funeral solemnly. Emily's body lay in the coffin, lifeless and without a pencil in her hand. We were sent outside to site of her burial. I watched as they lowered Emily into the ground and started throwing the dirt on top of the coffin.

Afterwards, we went home and I stayed with the Hippogriff's, not wanting to go inside and walk past her room. I couldn't believe she was gone. The person I cared for the most; gone. I swore to myself I would keep my promise to Emily and I would always be myself.

I looked up at Tina and found my voice.

"I have lost someone. My older sister, Emily. She died when she was fifteen from...."

I'd started crying. Tina wrapped her arms around me.

"I'm sorry, Newt. I didn't know."

"She died from...."

Tina looked me in the eye "You don't have to talk about it."

"...dragon pox."
