After school, I went to my tutor, and outside, I saw Emily talking with a boy. I thought for some minutes if I should go up to them or not, but in the end, I did. I tiptoed up to her and poked her sides. She screamed and gripped my arms to help herself. Once she saw that it was me, she grinned.

"Megan! You scared me!" Emily turned to the boy. "Jay, this is my friend Megan. Megan, this is my cousin from Ohio. His name is Jay." Emily smiled between the two. Emily was a kid that expected first moments to be smooth, because she had a trait where everything could be that way. She was a lucky girl.

"Hi." We both greeted each other with an awkward wave. Jay smiled and I looked the other direction. He just made you feel that way.

"Jay is 16, and Megan here is 13. Now let's go in. We're going to be so late!" Emily squealed and then dragged us both in the office. I could feel Jay staring at me from the side. Once we arrived in the classroom, Jay went off to the boys, and Emily sat with me.

"So? Is he hot or not?" Emily said while staring at him. I peeked a glance at him again. He was standing over another boy, staring at some game being played on the other boy's phone. Classic boy stuff.

"He's okay. But isn't he your cousin? It's not like you could date him." I started to take out my pencil case and binder. In my opinion, being organized was the key. I used to be super unorganized in fourth grade, and thinking about it still makes me shudder.

"True. He is. But still, he's hot." When I had first seen Jay, I wouldn't have thought that way. But now that Emily pointed it out, it was actually quite clear. As the conversation steered away from Jay, Emily began to tell me about some new couple at school. Apparently, some girl had cheated on her last boyfriend and acquired a new boyfriend in the span of twenty four hours. She kept repeating that she wanted to break that record. I tried not to roll my eyes at her. What kind of person wants to break that type of record? As her last sentence ended, the teacher entered the room.

"Hello, everyone!" Miss Yuan greeted us. Everyone said hello back to her. She took out the textbook and flipped open to a page. "Please open your books to page 166, everyone." As everyone flipped it open, I yawned. Emily looked over at me.

"Are you okay?" Emily turned back to the textbook, not waiting for an answer. I didn't say anything.

"Emily, please read paragraph one." Miss Yuan instructed, and Emily started on her cue. It wasn't a long paragraph, and it was a good story, but I didn't want to be here.

"Once upon a time, there was a widow. The widow was lonely, and terrified of the outside world. She had no one to trust, no one to lean on. It must have been a hard life for her, in the 21st century."

Outside, I could see two dogs playing. I smiled to myself. I wish I could be like them. I wish life were that easy.

"Megan. Class ended. You okay?" I looked to my right to see Emily staring right at me. I nodded and looked away. I felt that I had tears in my eyes, and I didn't want Emily to see it. Emily shrugged and got her backpack. "I'm going to leave first, alright?" I nodded, and she left. I collapsed on the desk as soon as she was gone. I felt so unlike myself. I usually had a lot of energy, or at least enough energy to carry myself out with the day. But I couldn't. There was an invisible barrier blocking it. My eyes closed, and I reached the darkness again.
