As winter was coming, and everyone had to work hard. Days were hard, with the population of the world increasing by the second, more and more others were being killed. It was a new idea of the government. Only those with the perfect abilities and skills would stay in the world. It was a terrible and terrifying idea in my opinion. I couldn't believe anyone would even stick to that idea. Turning away from my homework, I opened my door and trudged down the hallway. It was quiet, and there were no noises from every direction. Creepy, I thought.
"Hello? Mom? Dad? Guys?" I called down the hallway, but nobody seemed to hear. If they were there, at least. Hopefully, they were. But no such luck. The only words that came back to me were the echoes of my own voice. Looking around, I finally found a note from my parents.
We have extra work today, sweetie. Finish your work, have a good meal, and go to sleep. Setting the note back where it was, I went to my closet and opened the door. There was nothing inside. Everything was gone. Everything. Everything was-
Sitting up in my bed, I was breathing heavily. I looked around to see everything in place. It was just a dream, I told myself. But everything was so real. It was like everything around me was going to disappear. Everything will. Just not today, I kept telling myself. While repeating the same words to myself, my sister burst into my room.
"Get ready! What have you been doing for the past ten minutes?!" She growled at me. I glanced at the clock next to me. 9:30. Oh no! School would start in thirty minutes, and it took twenty minutes to get there. Groaning, I slowly slid out of bed. Tap, tap, tap. My sister was impatient tapping her foot next to me. "Well? Are you going to get up anytime during today and tomorrow?" I looked up to see her glaring at me. Afraid of her pulling mom's attention, I quickly got up and stretched. Glancing at the clock one more time, I rushed to the bathroom and quickly did my morning routine. Opening my closet, I took out a hoodie and some leggings. Tying my hair into a ponytail, I rushed out with my schoolbag. Downstairs, my mom and my sister were waiting for me.
"What were you doing, Megan?" My mom scolded me.
"I guess I was tired yesterday. Sorry, mom." My mom didn't say anything as she went outside and turned on the car. We got in and started the route to our school. I was correct. It took twenty minutes to get there, so I had five minutes to get to my locker and hurry to class. Once inside the school, I immediately ran to my locker. But there was a note on my locker. Better have my homework ready in first period. I clenched my fists. Bullies were the worst. Grabbing my math book, I set myself straight and ran to class. As I sat down, I could feel a glare onto me from across the room. I felt something hit my head, so I turned around and saw a crumpled piece of paper on the ground. I opened it to see the lettering. Pass it to Jessica. And hurry. I rolled my eyes. Slowly, I took out my math binder which held FeiFei's homework. Turning around, I passed it to Jessica. I saw FeiFei receive it and put a satisfied smirk on her face. I put my head back and sighed. Mrs. Luafer entered the class at that moment.
"Alright class. Yesterday, we took an exam. I'm very proud of the exam scores. Looks like I have to make it harder next time!" She laughed with a light voice. "Today we'll be going into Chapter 5. Please open your textbook to page 183, and Jake, please start reading the instructions." Jake began to read as I began to doodle on my paper.
"Polynomials are expressions with variables and coefficients. Please find the answer to the following problem." Jake finished reading, and Mrs. Luafer smiled at him.
"Very good. Megan, please start where Jake finished." What I didn't realize was that Mrs. Luafer was talking to me. "Megan!" At her shouting, I finally looked up to see everyone staring at me. It was so embarrassing. I could hear FeiFei and her friends laughing quietly, but loud enough for me to hear. "Megan, I'd like to see you after class. Ayano, start where Jake left off, please." I lowered my head onto my desk as one after another read the paragraphs. Why did my day have to start off this way?
After a hour, the bell rang and Mrs. Luafer dismissed everyone. Except for me. I made my way up to her desk. She looked at me with a disappointed face.
"Megan, I know you're a good student. But I don't know what is with you these days. You seem very unmotivated to listen and learn in class. I can't keep you in Honors Math if you keep up this attitude." With that one sentence, I was ready to burst into tears. Leave Honors Math? Impossible! My mother would be furious at me.
"I'll try harder, Mrs. Luafer. I promise. Please don't kick me out of this class." I put up my pleading eyes, but she didn't even glance at my face. She took out a file, which had my name in front. Megan Gallagher. She took out a piece of paper and showed it to me. It was a form of my grades. Many ranked from C's and D's. She laid another piece of paper next to it, which was from last year. The grades had a vast difference. Last year's only had A's. I bit my lip. I could see why she was worried.
"I know you will, Megan. You're a bright kid. I know you have a high potential. But because you are almost failing my class, you have two choices." I leaned forward, hoping that I had a way to redeem myself from this mess. "Are you listening to me this time?" I nodded, but she waited for a verbal response.
"Yes, Mrs. Luafer." I nodded again, although that's probably something she didn't want to see.
"Well, here are your options. You can either drop out of this class, and go to Regular Math. Or, you could have a parent conference and then work on some make-up assignments, which will boost your grades." Mrs. Luafer waited patiently for me to make my choice. A parent conference? That would be terrible. I would get a two hour lecture right after it. But dropping out wasn't a choice. I knew what Mrs. Luafer wanted me to pick.
"I'll take the second option, Mrs. Luafer. And I promise to work harder." I tried to smile, but it didn't come out. She patted my hand, and wrote me a late pass. The bell had rang a few minutes ago. Leaving her classroom, I thought about the parent conference that would follow up soon. Sighing, I pushed the door open to my English class. I stared at the class that was not sparing me a glance. Well, I still need to survive my other classes.
