"What?!" My sister nearly shouted at me. "How?!" I didn't know whether she was scared, mad, or surprised. I guessed it was a little of all.
"I have my ways." I tried to sound mysterious, but all that did was panic Janice. She slammed her hand down on the table making me flinch, and then stalked over the table towards me. I shrinked back, afraid of what my sister could do.
"Tell me, now, Megan." She threatened me. I flinched and whimpered, but she didn't seem to notice. This wasn't the Janice I knew.
"J-janice... you're scaring me..." I shivered. She sighed loudly and returned to her seat. I tried to eat some more food after that, but I couldn't digest it. Not after I had seen Janice change so dramatically.
"I'm sorry about earlier, Meg." She whispered as I got up to leave my dishes in the sink.
"It's okay," I reassured her. But it wasn't. It wasn't okay at all. I tried not to flinch when she walked by.
After thanking her for the food, I scampered upstairs into my room. Collapsing on my bed, I breathed hard. Janice's stunt had scared me a lot. She was a whole different being. A... monster. She looked ready to break anything. I breathed in and out again and again until my breathing was back to normal. Exactly why was I doubting my sister of anything right now? She was always there for me. So why was feeling weird?
"It's nothing," I told myself. That didn't work. Ring! My phone beeped a message. I picked it up, noticing that it was from Ella. I rolled my eyes. What did this girl want from me? Swiping the screen, I picked up my phone. "What?"
"Meet me at the park in front of your house." She hung up the phone. How did she even know where my house was? Grabbing my coat, I silently left the house hoping that Janice didn't notice.
I saw Ella standing against the tree so I walked over. She scoffed when she saw the coat I was wearing,
"Cold?" She asked with a smile. I didn't know whether it was fake or real, but it was a smile. I shrugged.
"Why did you ask me to meet you here?" I crossed my arms.
"Why can't I?" She asked, mocking my posture. I narrowed my eyes. Why was she here?
"Just get to the point."
She hummed.
"Ella." Another voice appeared from the side.
"Finally. We can finally get started." Ella looked from me, to FeiFei.
___
"I have things to do," FeiFei growled as she glared at me.
"You think I want to be here?" I asked her to warm myself. California wasn't exactly the coldest, but it wasn't warm either. Especially considering that we were sitting in the middle of a park, where wind was blowing.
"Alright. I just need to ask you something, Megan," Ella rubbed her hands together. She pulled out her phone and scrolled through. "Is this your work?" She asked, sounding quite snarky.
The photo was a picture of FeiFei and a boy kissing. I squinted my eyes. Wait, is that Jay? Appalled, I fell backwards from my position.
"Isn't that Jay?" I whispered. FeiFei nodded knowingly.
"Did you do it?"
"Why would I do that?"
"Because you obviously know him. Maybe you're jealous?" FeiFei held a smug face. I snorted.
"Jealous of what? Of your relationship?"
FeiFei looked at me with scrunched eyebrows, and then turned to Ella. "It's not her."
Ella motioned towards me. "You never know." FeiFei glared at me one more time before she left the area with Ella.
I sat for a couple of minutes. Jay? How did Jay know FeiFei? Emily had clearly told me that Jay was not from California. So how did they know each other? They obviously couldn't be related. FeiFei had lived in my town for as long as I could remember, and she never went on trips.
It seemed as though I was surrounded by mysteries. I still didn't know why Ella hated me so much either. I should start from the beginning, I told myself. There was no other way than to start at the beginning.
___
Malt High School, I typed into the spacebar. I returned home to find Janice gone, so I just tramped up to my room. I pressed enter, reaching hundreds of results. While scrolling through, I found a video labeled, Looking over the death of Dave Ellis. Sucking in a breath, I nervously clicked on the video.
After the introduction, a woman came out onto the screen. She was about my mother's age, although she looked much more younger with the amount of makeup she had put on. She was holding a mic, and she stared at the screen with a big smile.
"Hello, Seals! We are here to mourn over the death of Dave Ellis. He died five years ago, and we have their family to give a speech today." She motioned over to the group sitting in the corner. I almost fell off my chair when I saw who was sitting in the middle.
___
I sat, frozen in my chair. What had I just seen? It couldn't be, could it? Shakily, I took out my phone and scrolled until I found the person I wanted to call. No, not wanted. I needed to call her. But my fingers froze right on top of the screen. I couldn't press it. I just couldn't. She had been the best friend to me, but why? Why hadn't she ever told me? Shaking my head, I just typed in a message. Meet me at Sheu's Donuts. And, send.
