"What were you thinking? Missing school is not an option, Megan. Truancy is a crime, don't you know that?" My mother was lecturing me for leaving school early. But she hadn't heard the words I had. She wouldn't understand, no matter how much she knew me. "You're grounded." That made my head fly up and stare at her.

"B-but... My friends-" My mother raised her eyebrow as I stumbled over the right word. She stepped over to me.

"Did your friends convince you to leave school? They sound like a bad influence, then." As she was about to leave the room, I told her.

"They called me a freak, mom. That's all that happens everyday. I get bullied, tormented, annoyed. And that's a cycle. I left the school early with my own will, mom. If my friends weren't there for me, I would have nothing to look forward to at school. There would be nothing waiting for me there." I said to her with tears in my eyes. My mother gulped and turned to me.

"Do you want me to talk with the school?" That wouldn't do anything.

"They know William's records. Why would they believe you or me?" That was a fact. Janice had also got bullied because of William's actions, but when we told the school, they didn't believe us. Everything was our fault, entirely, according to the school. Janice had to move schools, and now, she was perfectly fine. But I couldn't move schools. Not when I had just made some new friends.

"True. Then what do you want me to do about it?" Good question. I really don't know the answer to that.

"Nothing. I just want you to listen to me. But I'm not leaving that school until I find out why she bullies me like that." I said bravely. My mother gently smiled at me.

"I like your determination, Megan. Keep to it." She smiled and left my bedroom. Keep to it, I thought. That's exactly what I'll do. I sent the words back into my head, and laid down on my bed. I wonder when I'll get to see my brother. Sitting upright on my bed, I wondered what Janice was doing. Carefully, I went down the stairs to see my mother and Janice talking. Shoot! I thought. I hid behind a wall to listen to them.

"You met with him? You know he's a bad person!" My mother seethed at Janice's words. Were they talking about the guys named Mark that had shown up in the morning?

"Mom! He came to the house! Megan saw him! What else could I do? I had to send him away!" So they were talking about him. Was this the secret Janice had? But no. Janice wasn't one to get swirled around a man's finger.

"So why would you tell a man like that your address?" My mom stood with her hands on her hips. Janice sighed.

"Why is he doing this to us?" Janice asked my mother. My mother looked away, shaking her head.

"He just hates our family." My mother said the sentence like it was a simple problem that was not able to be solved. So this guy named Mark had something to do with our family. Interesting. Maybe I could help my family. My mind was suddenly full of ideas. But that soon turned to anger. I pointed my chin up high. Why hadn't they told me? Did they think that I was unworthy? Not knowing that I was breathing very heavily, Janice found me on the other side of the door.

"Megan? What are you doing here?" She said, tugging on her ear. I didn't say anything. I opened my mouth, but words didn't come out. Janice looked at me, but when she saw no reply, she didn't say anything and walked up the stairs. Before reaching the top, she spoke. "Stop eavesdropping on conversations, Megan. You know that isn't right." Looking at the wall, I kicked it. I whimpered in pain. Why did I do that? I knew why. But I didn't want to believe it.
