Have you ever wanted to make do on another promise? Well, seven spotlights have passed, and it's finally time to discuss Bea. R's second webtoon; You have got to be kitten me!
Summary
Twenty-odd years ago, a mysterious comet turned every cat in the world into cat people. With that change, they've quickly managed to adapt to society as if it was normal with one particular couple having a less than ordinary relationship.
Characters
Rupert: Your average office worker, Rupert, tries his best to provide for the cat of his life, Mino. This causes him to have a somewhat parental figure. On most days, though, Rupert can be rather clumsy, regretful, stressed, and easily flustered. But at the end of the day, he is a nice solid guy.
Mino: A Japanese Bobtail Mino expresses all the typical traits of a cat. She is a constant trouble maker, feisty, casual, somewhat selfish, and seductive. Though underneath all that trouble lies a sweet girl who always makes up for her mistakes.
Overview
Bea. R's art strikes again as this is the first time I've experienced her art in full color. And my god is it a treat to read. The Saturday morning comic book format is now gone full manga style with the more detailed eyes and more realistic figures for everybody; it works to make the character design pop even more.
Backgrounds are amazing to look at, and the various cats in the series get beautifully designed. The way Bea R can characterize them while still having them get based on real cats is impressive.
Speaking of the "cats," this series does everything they can to make them cute, unlike the movie of the same name. Mino expresses all the tropes that you can imagine about cats, both good and primarily bad (hence why I'm a forcibly dog person). The series also changes things up a little by implying that certain cats like Mino have some form of supernatural cat-related powers. It's a lot less over the top than In Security but a lot comfier as well.
On the other hand, Mino and Rupert have what I think is a "Helpful Fox Senko san" situation going on. I'm saying they have a hyper-specific but heartwarming relationship that isn't wholly fetish-based for those who haven't seen the anime. The story is still in its infancy, so more recurring characters and info on Mino's past will undoubtedly be revealed given her amnesia.
Epilogue
Overall You've Gotta Be Kitten me is a very fun webtoon with some real potential on its unique premise. This story will be more serialized than In Security, but I also hope that more of a definitive cast will be established as the series goes on. It's pretty easy to binge, so I hope you enjoy it! But with these spotlights out of the way, this was Canvas Palooza 2!
I know that it was far more limited than usual, but I think I will change up the original canvas palooza to be more informative. This is supposed to be a celebration of all webtoons I read, and I hope to keep that up. I also would like to see more webtoons in general in 2021 since I've been slacking (not that you guys can say, lol). So with all of that way, let's see where the spotlight takes us all next.
