Have you ever wanted to chill out and enjoy your daily life? Well, if you do, you're not going to find it in today's spotlight because we will be covering a rambunctious romp called in Security by Bea. R!
Author
In security is a team effort between Bea. R and her spouse "Mr. Husband." They are one of the more hardworking pairs. They've been working on the series nonstop for four years straight before getting a real break. So for those of you who want to know their mostly hand-drawn process, here it is.
Mr. Husband draws rough sketches on full-size sheets of paper based on the ideas they've come up with.
Bea uses a lightbox built into her drawing table to transfer the roughs into more refined drawings on paper laid on top of the roughs.
Any changes Bea makes get discussed for approval or revision.
Bea makes a new drawing using finer graphite pencils.
Mr. Husband draws in the final lines using Nib pens and black India waterproof ink.
Halftones are applied, final cleanup gets performed, and other elements that get prepared separately may get pasted onto the page.
Summary
Follow the benign adventures of the two eccentric newlyweds Sam and Sedine, as they have to deal with their equally crazy neighbors in hijinks that will tear up the town.
Characters
Sam: Our heavenly husband, Sam, is a security officer that is often friendly, passive, low maintenance, and somewhat mischievous. He might not always show it, but he does love his wife Sedine dearly and provides for her in terms of his job as a security guard.
Sedine: Put, Sedine is a clumped-up whirlwind that loves Sam with all of her heart. She is energetic, flirtatious, arrogant, crazy, violent, childish, and possessive. And Sam wouldn't have it any other way.
Roy: Sedine's ever-loving cousin, Roy, is also a childish, mischievous, free-spirited, and eccentric family man who hangs out with Sam as they share the same job. While he can be pretty possessive of his things and let his mind wander, he's never afraid to humor his children and show them a good time.
Ellie: Sam's former lover, Ellie, is a bit of a dimwit and airhead, leading her to trouble. She can also be rather picky when it comes to her men, but she is a lovely woman at heart.
Hubbs: An aggressive and hulky brute of a man Hubbs is a hopeless romantic at heart.
Overview
In the short time, I've read In security, I've become obsessed with Bea. R's artwork. Just seeing Sam and Sedine alone radiates a mix of funny old-fashioned comic strips and manga, creating beautiful yet entertaining illustrations, especially when in color. Seriously, the bonus art is fantastic. Overall this series is also the epitome of daily bite-sized fun given its routine updates.
The combination of over-the-top expressions and snark makes the character's interactions all the more fun. I think this is my favorite cast in the slice of life genre in terms of webtoon.
Every character in this gets massive screen time, so it never feels like Sam and Sedine run the show, which is more than I can say with other webtoons (Small World especially). Another aspect that I like about the cast is that they rebound off each other constantly and the fact that they aren't perfect characters, just entertaining ones with their insecurities.
They can be incredibly flawed and mean-spirited to each other, but it never comes off as unenjoyable with how cranked up everything is. In addition, the series has a soft continuity in which characters will reference small events that will carry over while still having fun original adventures to mix things up. So you can read something from chapter 1 to 1082 and still have something to enjoy as I read around.
Epilogue
Overall, security from the name alone is an amazingly binge-able slice of life that deserves to reign supreme on Canvas. And between their book and Mr.Husbands' youtube channel, the series is bound to gain more popularity. I'll be reviewing Bea. R's other webtoon soon enough, but in the meantime, let's see where the spotlight takes us next.
