Have you ever wanted a break from the complex plots and intricate narratives? Well, wait no more because, for this spotlight, I'm tackling one of the funniest webtoons on the app/site. And that is the weirdly titled Waffles and Pancakes by DT Saranya.
Summary
Two college friends, Adien and Kaia, live their lives answering the stupidest and most random questions this world has to offer.
Characters
Aiden: A very impulsive and ... creative guy. He continually asks the most random and grossest questions imaginable, which often annoys his friend Kaia. He is also very mischievous and fun-loving, constantly getting out of homework. But at the end of the day, he is a kind person that means well.
Kaia: A hushed, short-tempered, and rude girl Kaia is the pancake to Aiden's waffles (Still have no idea what that means). Kaia often holds herself in high regard and so often needs help relaxing, so as much as she hates Aiden, she also ... tolerates him. She might not be the friendliest person, but she is undoubtedly a loyal one.
Overview
Waffles and Pancakes looking back, has honestly no right to be as good as it is, and that's no joke. While a lot of the humor relies on wtf so random jokes, I never feel as though said jokes were a crutch for the overall series to work. Probably because the characters of Aiden and Kaia get so well established, I know I'm always looking for a good time.Speaking of Aiden and Kaia, holy crap, are they just such great characters. It's not something that needed to happen, but it's so refreshing sometimes to see people of the opposite sex remain friends for an entire story.
And even remain such good friends throughout to as for every five chapters where the two are ripping into each other (physically or literally); there are even more significant examples of how far they'll go to cheer the other up. This can often lead to many thoughtful discussions that feel much more impactful now that I'm getting older.
On top of that, the series is far from being a two-person show. Not only is the series filled out with an array of great supporting characters, but there is continuity. There are many running subplots and arcs throughout the story, creating some pretty interesting ways to mix up the humor.
Why the freaking title?
So I think that in one chapter, they said Aiden was the waffle and Kaia was the pancake. I think it'd be a pleasing opposite feel to where Kaia is the authentic waffle since they're naturally a little bit harder and easier to bite into. Or maybe it's to show off the fact that they're similar opposites. And maybe Aiden is the pancake because of its softer nature. Or perhaps I'm a weird high schooler trying too hard to put meaning into everything because he is afraid of the infinite bs that life brings him. Who knows.
Epilogue
Overall I hope you enjoy this webtoon and review, and for now, I must answer this question. Where will the spotlight take us next?
