Chapter 49 - Reflection
This is probably the first time ever that Mrs. Barnett has told me off for not doing my work. Something else occupies me and that is Christian’s affection he is showing towards me during our first class on a Wednesday morning.
“Sorry, Mrs. Barnett.” I apologise to my teacher, using an innocent voice to keep our relationship smooth. She gives me a sidelong glance as she travels around the classroom, helping students with their work. I look back to Christian where we join hands again and continue talking about this Saturday’s party.
“It’ll be our first party together.” Christian states, trying to convince me to go. I haven’t really decided yet because one; the stories that have come back from these parties are not pretty, two; I’ve never been to a party before, and three; I wouldn’t know what to wear. I don’t really own anything fancy or party worthy, so it makes it hard for me to decide. Other girls have a ton of party dresses in their closets and they can just pull one out and have no fuss. I make things difficult for myself.
“I know, but does it look like I have fun around here?” I ask Christian, rhetorically. I give him a cheap look, swinging our arms back and forth in between our desks. He produces a smirk with his whole face, making my body tingle all over.
“Oh yes, you certainly have a lot of fun around here. And I’m planning to give you more fun.” Winking, he uses a deep voice to produce his answer that I wasn’t expecting. I gape and extend the ends of my lips to my ears, feeling quite embarrassed but cheeky at the same time. I playfully slap him on his hand and roll my eyes in a cute way. “Fine, we’ll go.”
I quickly let go of his hand, just as I see Mrs. Barnett coming down our aisle. We both drop our heads down to our worksheets and stay quiet as she walks past, getting started on the first question on the page. Have I really wasted all this time?
“Seems like you two are quite busy, hmm?” Mrs. Barnett’s voice sounds from above me. I look up from my desk and look over my shoulder. Christian does the same, giving me a shake of his head and a fed up smile. Mrs. Barnett is slowly crouching down so all three of us can be on the same level as each other. My cheeks get heated as this scene carries on, making me wonder what is going to happen next.
“I’m glad to see you two mingling and socialising, but I’d rather you keep that for later. I don’t want my other students getting the wrong impression of my two favourite pupils.” Without giving me a chance to speak, she stands back up and walks right past us, leaving so many different types of thoughts racing around in my head. I just look to Christian with my arms on my desk, displaying the same look I gave him before. I am turning into a bad girl now.
I leave the air between us silent, abandoning the thoughts floating in the atmosphere around Christian and I. But before I get back to my work, I see Celine walking up to Mrs. Barnett with her cheerleading skirt flowing around her long, tan legs, her hands intertwined with each other resting in front of her body. I mentally cringe and roll my eyes, thinking I actually wasted my time being her “friend”.
“Miss, can I please use the bathroom?” She asks in a girly voice. Her dark brown hair is straight today, rather than it’s usual waves. It hides her face as she speaks to Mrs. Barnett, but she flicks it back with her hand.
“Celine, class ends in ten minutes, I’m sure you can wait until break…” Mrs. Barnett looks at her watch, shrugging her shoulders as she tries to decline Celine’s request. She bows her head to look through her own eyes instead of through her rectangular glasses. She gives Celine a pout and notices Celine’s tight figure. She pleads again, but this time in a lower tone, making it inaudible for me. Mrs. Barnett sighs, and lets her go. Celine smiles and turns her body to the door and the teacher goes back to her desk. Looking down at Christian, I see him doing his work, relieved that he isn’t watching Celine as well. He just focuses on his work while I watch Celine turn right into the hall.
