Chapter 12 - Lost
“Tell me about your family.”
I shove my hands between my thighs, repositioning myself on the steel bench that I sit on. Christian sits beside me, leaning his back on the stand behind us, getting comfortable as we look down on the football field. We had become tired after doing two laps of the field, chatting like we’ve been friends forever. It’s been a perfect time, getting to know Christian a lot more and him getting to know me more.
“Well, my parents are happily married, their names are Antonio and Peyton,” I start off, feeling the now cool wind blow my hair back, “and I have a sister in junior year, her name is Maggie.” We have been out here for more than an hour now and the sun has started to slowly set to the horizon, being mid-afternoon, close to four.
We are now getting to the more personal topics, say like family. I’m kind of excited to hear about his family and get to know more about what happened to them. I just keep my expression normal, not wanting to look suspicious around Christian.
“Wow, that’s cool having a little sister. Is she a pain in the butt?” He asks placing his hands behind his head as he leans back and enjoys the day. I look down to the ground, giggling at his stereotypical question that most people would agree on. I just shake my head and look back to him where he plasters a smirk on his face that matches perfectly with his eyes.
“Not really, we get along quite well.” I say in a high tone. Christian’s expression turns wide, surprised at me and Maggie’s relationship. It’s true, we really do get along really well, and we hardly fight over little things that most siblings would. It’s a blessing to have her around, but as I think of her short, dark brown wavy hair and small black eyes, I kind of miss having her always there for me. We always come up with things to talk about.
“What about your family?” I ask nicely, not meaning to be nosy about his family. His expression changes dramatically, going from a happy grin to a frown. I might have upset him at the mention of his family, but his eyes fixates in front of us, repositioning himself so that he leans forward in his seat with his elbows leaning on his knees.
I watch him as he stares off into the distance, keeping his eyeline low and body rigid. I may have pulled a few strings here, clearly seeing him pressured into talking. Christian’s jaw clenches, outlining his perfect face. He is literally flawless, but some flaws on him are beautiful in comparison to my flaws.
His long breathe in made me flinch, uncertain of what he’s going to do next. My eyes carefully examine his moves, slowly turning his head that rests on his clenched fists towards me, keeping my expression straight and lighthearted.
“Well, since you already know some of my family’s story,” he makes a note referring to the time I eavesdropped on his conversation with Mrs. Bloomsfield, and I look away, biting my tongue at the stupid idea of eavesdropping, “I should tell you more.”
My eyes travel back to his, where he rests his back on the stand behind us while I cross my right leg over my left. This is going to be a long story.
With a deep sigh, he begins with a miserable tone, “my dad went to war, along with my mom because she wanted to stay with him during the time to keep him safe. So she became a war nurse, having to treat so many wounded soldiers in a dreadful place with gun shots being fired so close to the hospital she was working at.”
