Chapter 69 - Loud
[Christian’s POV]
My mind comes around to Aimee’s suspicious behaviour for the hundredth time tonight as I sit here in my room. I’ve been thinking about her since I left her at her dorm, and after she came out of Heather’s office, I knew something wasn’t right. She was way too happy for starters, completely forgetting about what we just came back from. Also, the weird noises I was hearing while waiting outside in the hall. I could hearing slithering voices and exclaims, not really sure if it was out of excitement or shock.
It’s not that easy getting her off my mind, because I’ve been debating whether or not I should text her to have a chat with me, about what the real reason was behind Heather and Aimee’s meeting. The thought of them keeping a secret between them pops in my mind, and I try not let that invade my brain.
During my time I’ve spent in my room, I’ve tried solving the Rubik’s Cube again. I made a bit of progress with matching up colours, and I got a row of green and a column of red. It’s kind of motivated me to go further, but as I turn one side, my phone buzzes on my desk where I sit, the screen lighting up with the time as quarter to seven. Aimee’s name reads to me, my hands immediately reaching for my phone.
Unlocking my phone, my heart beats faster as I realise I was just thinking about how she was acting around me. Maybe this is it? Maybe she just wants to hang out and spend as much time with me as possible? The message loads and my eyes read over the text, biting my lip as I do so.
Aimee: I’m coming over in five. I need to talk to you.
I suddenly get that nauseous feeling in my stomach whenever something like this occurs. I panic because something else bad might happen in a few short minutes and it may be something I never saw coming. But what else could it be apart from the soldiers nearing North Carolina? I know that they’re incredibly close, but what’s the big problem?
Calming myself with a few deep breaths, I put the Rubik’s Cube away in my drawer, keeping it in a safe spot where I know where to find it. I tap my foot on the floor, straighten items on my desk and close the bathroom door. Never in my life have I had this much OCD before, and I feel like Aimee’s has rubbed off on me. We’ve kind of given each other a few extra traits while being together, and I can’t help but smile and think of each other as one; we’ve merged into the same person.
A couple of minutes go by, and soft knocks are heard at my door. I slowly walk over and turn the handle, peeking through the gap to see a beautiful Aimee, scarred with a worried frown on her face and parted lips. I look down and see the same fabric bag she was carrying to her dorm; the one she walked out of Heather’s office with. Were there really books inside? Or something else way more dangerous?
“Hey. What’s wrong?” I ask, opening the door wider as she lets herself inside. She walks in like she’s never been in before; pulling the bag closer to her and wrapping the handles tighter around her hands, taking small steps into the room and looking down like she’s afraid. Closing the door without a sound, I lock it with the chain, keeping us engaged inside so no one has access to us.
I walk over to Aimee, her back facing me and her head bowing while she fiddles with the bag. Coming over to her side, her lips are pouted and her eyes are tightly closed. That weird feeling inside my stomach returns, sensing danger between us. I push for it. “Those aren’t books in there, are they?”
It takes a couple of heavy seconds for Aimee to respond, her head craning towards mine where she shakes it and purses her lips together. I can see them tremble as she stares at me, her wavy hair sitting on her shoulders and never falling into her view. It doesn’t look like she will be speaking, so I ask her the questions. “What did Mrs. Bloomsfield really talk to you about?”
