Chapter 60 - Broken
Another class to get through. More time to pass thinking about my recent breakup. Less living.
My voice has suddenly become lost within my throat, taking out my anger on other people by ignoring them. Say, like Tiffany trying to talk to me and ask what my problem is. I appreciate her sitting next to me in class today, and it’s good to sit with a friend after a breakup. But I really don’t want to talk about it, even though the voice in my mind is speaking to me with harsh words.
Tiffany sighs as she gives up trying to comfort me. I feel bad for doing this to her, but how can my moods change when I’ve been treated poorly? I just stare at my maths worksheet in front of me and stare at the words that bounce around the page, forming new sentences asking me about my life. I look away, watching Tiffany keep her gaze down with her hands in her lap. We’ve both been hurt by people in our lives, and we both feel the pain of heartbreak. We’re two heavy hearted girls.
“How about a movie night at mine? I’m sure whatever’s on your mind will clear up by watching a few movies with Tibby.” Tiffany’s voice suddenly pitches higher and our eyes meet. Her idea lifts my heart a little, picturing all three of us watching movies together like high school friends do. It’s been a while since Tibby and I did something like that, and I long for the idea. My lips move for the first time in this class, forming a small smile and words that turn out hoarse and quiet.
“Sure, I’d love that. But don’t you have cheerleading practise?” I ask, pointing my index finger at her, realising it’s Monday and after classes cheerleading is held on the football field. Tiffany just shakes her head and scrunches up her nose. I wonder if her and Tibby still want to even be in the squad.
“Nah. We’ll skip just for you.” She sends me a wide smile, her big black dreamy eyes forming one too. I can tell she really wants to help me, so I cooperate and thank her for her kindness. At least someone is willing to reach out to me. It’s just these tiny things that make someone else’s day better, and Tiffany has done just that.
Maths class ends for the day and we all head to the cafeteria. We have migrated to a different table, away from Celine and Sherri’s table that used to be mine and Tibby’s before everything went wrong. We’re basically hidden from the crowd and it’s a table fit for three. I’m glad I only have two friends. That’s enough for college, anyway.
Tibby wobbles beside us on her crutches, but I can see she has made a large recovery over the past weeks. She can practically walk on her broken leg, but a limp is still evident when she walks. She said she’d rather stay on the crutches until she’s fully recovered, otherwise she will hurt her leg even more. I’m proud to see her through my eyes as a friend again, I thought we’d never make it again after our fight, but the one that’s been your friend since a young age really does stay with you for a long time, even if you have fights in between. I will never let her go ever again.
During our lunch break we discuss our movie night and plan what movies we would watch. Films like Mean Girls, White Chicks and 21 Jump Street are mentioned, going for comedy based films. Tiffany suspects something going on between me and Christian, so she steers away from romantic films Tibby mentions. I mentally thank her, and become more open to my friends. Maybe some girl time helps ease the pain of boys. Friendship is honestly the best thing in the world.

Classes end for the day and I haven’t been this excited to see my friends since I can remember. We all planned to go back to our dorms to change into something comfy and them meet up at Tiffany’s dorm. Thankfully I haven’t seen Christian since our encounter, and I plan to stay away from him until I suspect somethings up with him or the war finds its way into my mind.
