Chapter 59 - Discover
[Next day]
[Aimee’s POV]
Yesterday’s memories will forever haunt me whenever I look at Mason’s face right next to me. Even though I’ve said that our friendship is basically determined on Christian, I can’t help but to talk to him because I feel sorry for what he’s done for me. His purple bruises have turned yellow, kind of blending in with his skin. The black circles around his eyes don’t seem to be going anywhere, they just keep replaying that scene over and over again in my mind.
English class has been a refreshment from everything that’s happened this past week. Classes have been ranked lower on my important list, having Christian right up the top. I don’t even know how I get all my homework done in between my social life.
The class is nearly over, but I abandon my worksheet about Shakespeare, the greatest writer of all time, supposedly. Mason fills me in on what happened yesterday when he left me all alone. I don’t blame him for running away from me because most of my dilemmas are caused by me doing something good, and someone else dragging it on and turning it into some bad news.
“Christian is suspended from classes and he has to do community service for a week, apparently.” Mason keeps his voice low as we have our bodies turned towards one another’s while still in our desks. I feel my heart sink at the news, meaning I won’t be able to see Christian in maths class for a week. I still want to talk to him about what happened and if we’re still together or not, because I haven’t seen him since the fight and you can never leave a girl waiting after something as cliff hanging as that. It’s like the end of book with a bad cliff hanger.
Sighing, I play with my pen in between my fingers, jiggling it in all ways to distract me. I’m feeling empty, once again. Me without Christian is like a glass half full, but this glass has emotions and feelings. I miss our early days when we used to be problem free and no one bothered our relationship. Everything got stuffed up the day Celine told me and the other girls that she liked Christian. All her tries have been unsuccessful but she got her way one night without even trying. I always wonder if she still likes him or not.
The bell for recess finally rings and Mr. Holloman rubs the board from his handwriting and doesn’t bother to set the class any homework. I’ll still do it in my spare time. Gathering my books as fast as I can, I walk out beside Mason with no words spoken between us. We don’t exactly have bad blood anymore, considering I still want to help and protect him from Christian. It’s a risk to be hanging around with Mason out in the hallways, because Christian could be around the next corner ready to pounce on Mason. But if Christian has community service, I doubt he’ll be around here. The football field is someplace more likely.
I say goodbye to Mason, heading to my next destination; my locker. The football field gives me an idea to search there for Christian, imagining him picking up rubbish from the gardens surrounding the pitch. Although he is that type of guy to care for things, his image has changed and because of his outburst on Mason, he is viewed as powerful to the student body. I’ve seen Christian grow from a shy, little boy to a strong, overprotective man. See how one person can change another? Incredible.
He’s not at his locker, as I guessed, so I just walk straight to mine and turn my combination wheel. My eyes travel to the faint black marks on my locker, outlining the words of Celine’s work. Rolling my eyes, I swing my locker open, removing the sight of the faint black paint permanently stained on my locker. I do my usual; slide my books on top of the shelves and grab my bag, hanging it on my arm as I close my locker and secure it with the combination.
My feet walk in the opposite direction of the cafeteria, walking to the nearby double doors leading to the football field. The whether is cloudy today, creating a dark atmosphere in the air. Wind picks up around me, blowing my black hair in my face. Tucking strands behind my ears, I search the field for only one person that stands out to me. There in the corner holding a small rubbish bin and a trash pick in the other, grasping small packets and placing them in the bin with such carefulness.
