Chapter 18 - Trouble
[Next day]
I'm bitchin', great hair, / The boys all love to stare, / I'm wanted, I'm hot, / I'm everything you're not, / I'm pretty, I'm cool, / I dominate this school, / Who am I? Just guess, / Guys wanna touch my chest, / I'm rockin', I smile, / And many think I'm vile, / I'm flyin', I jump, / You can look but don't you hump, / Whoo / I'm major, I roar, / I swear I'm not a whore, / We cheer and we lead, / We act like we're on speed, / Hate us 'cause we're beautiful, / Well we don't like you either, / We're cheerleaders, / We are cheerleaders.
I laugh at the scene, thinking how funny their words are when performing a routine in front of the whole school. My little flashback ends as Tibby nudges me, chuckling as she watches me stare at the ground. I snap back to reality, knowing that I have a squad to lead with Celine by my side. Right now, we’re adding on to our routine we started last week, leaving it all up to us to nail bridges and handstands, even attempting a back handspring. Celine said that only the girls who can do it will actually do it in the routine. That seems like a fair statement to me.
Looking out to the girls who stand in their positions, Celine thinks about what moves we could add on next. I think too, only coming up with lame actions that Celine dismiss straight away. I don’t blame her; I’m no dancer, but at least I’m trying.
“How about…” Celine starts off with some sharp arm movements, adding in a body roll and a jump kick travelling backwards. The girls seem impressed, all agreeing to the move that Celine made up. She flashes everyone a smile, being grateful for their small applause and surprised expressions. She teaches us the step, being very easy. I get the hang of it, always mixing up the arm movements every time.
I now feel all the weight on me as I try to help out Celine. Since I’m the vice captain, I should be doing everything the captain does, choreographing moves and leading the group. I try my best to take inspiration from what I’ve seen and try to put it into my own. It works, adding my moves here and there.
“What shall we do now, Aimee?” Celine says in a high, happy voice, after we go over moves we’re unsure of. With a big smile on her face, she laces her hands together, swaying her body from side to side like she’s sucking up to me. I shrug my shoulders, having no idea what to do next. “I don’t mind. You can chose the next move.”
She pouts her lips, looking hurt. “I don’t want to have to do everything, we’re the captains. We’re supposed to share.” Emphasising the word, I give her an eyebrow, not really sure what she means by that. Her batting eyelashes tells me there’s something fishy about her behaviour right now; it’s like she wants to start trouble.
“Well, you have more dance experience than I do.” I point out, making her feel better. Placing her hand on her chest, she flicks her hair, putting on quite a show. Resting her hands on her hips, she turns to me, lowering her voice so only her and I are able to hear.
“Well, thanks but whatever you say. It’s not like you’re going to get everything that you want in the end.” Her eyes roll around, sounding annoyed and taken back. I don’t get her unusual behaviour right now, maybe she’s up to something? It’s not like you’re going to get everything that you want in the end. Is she referring to how I’m not going to get a lot of parts in the routine, or is she referring to how I’m not going to choreograph a lot of the moves? Or is she referring to something completely different?
