Chapter 47 - Revelation

[Christian’s POV]

“I’ll see you later babe.”

I kiss Aimee on the top of her head, taking her in for a big hug, with her ear pressed against my chest. I rub her back, resting my chin on my head as I let people walk past without worrying about them staring. I told Aimee that my mom wants to speak to me through my aunt’s office, just a couple of steps from where we are standing. I have a bad feeling about this, and it’s affected Aimee as well. She seems to understand me, and all my worries have drained into her. I don’t want her to feel endangered.

So I let her go and squeeze her cheeks, smiling down to her to wash away her worries. “I’ll meet you at your dorm.” Aimee nods, biting her lip. Slowly peeling away from me, our hands are the last thing to let go, pretending every moment is its last. Our fingertips disconnect and she turns her head away from me, walking away with her bag resting on her arm. Watching her beautiful curly hair sway on her back, I admire her from this view, watching her get smaller as she disappears into another hallway, leaving me alone. I decide to move along and to get this phone call over and done with.

Storming over to my aunt’s office, I make my way in, not needing to knock since I am family. Heather is sitting at her desk, typing away at her laptop. She immediately looks up and a smile spreads across her pale face. “Hello, Christian. How was your day?”

She greets me with a small bat of her eyelashes, extending her painted lips to her ears. I stuff my hands in my pockets, nodding my head to her question. “Good,” a long pause of silence fills the room, forgetting why I am suddenly in here but remembering once my mind wonders to a new piece of information, “you said mom wanted me to call?”

“Oh yes,” Heather says a bit too quickly, jumping out of her seat while joining her hands, “this is very urgent.” She scurries over to the telephone situated on the other end of her office which leads into a closed off cabinet room which contains student files. My heart picks up the pace as I take in the “urgent” request my mom has delivered, thinking of what could be so urgent right now. Well, thinking about it, a lot of things in my life are urgent.

Heather picks up the phone, punching in the numbers of the hospital my mom lives in. I stand behind my aunt patiently as the clock ticks, hearing the seconds go by as we wait for someone to pick up. Looking around, I try to clear my mind of anything that may distract me during this phone call; I definitely don’t want to think about other things while my mom is trying to explain something. I take in a few deep breaths and release them, calming my body just as my aunt starts speaking again.

“Yes hello, can you please redirect us to Caterina Parker?” Heather looks back at me behind her shoulder, displaying a frown on her winkled face. As she waits, she bites her nail on her pinky finger, taking that sign as worry building up inside of her. She hands me the phone, since it’s intended for me. I take it, pressing the cold phone against my ear, listening to the faint noise of numbers being dialled and redirected to my mom’s room. The ringing sound chimes again, vibrating my ear as I wait for my mom to pick it. Within one ring, her voice sounds as bright as ever.

“Christian! Oh my gosh, thank God you called!” I can hear small pants at the other end of the line, telling my heart to speed up. My mood has suddenly changed, turning from a cool, relaxed boy into a worried and troubled one. This will only end one way, and I’m keen to find out.

“What is it? Tell me, mom.” I didn’t even know how anxious I have become, going by the shakiness of my voice and how loud it becomes in this small space. I look over my shoulder to Heather where she stands by my side, watching the phone call unfold. I didn’t even know she had her hand placed on my arm, but I let it be as I need someone to comfort me during this time.
