You wake up with a terrible migraine. You're laying in your underwear on your bed, and when you open your eyes you see Spencer reading a book next to you. You notice the colorful cover with flowers and paper airplanes. He's reading your favorite book, "Everything Everything".
"Have you gotten to the part where they go to Hawaii?" You ask. Spencer quickly shuts the book and turns towards you. He rubs your back and pulls you closer.
"Good Morning. How are you feeling?" He asks. He has a concerned look in his eyes and they're scanning your face.
"Like my head is about to explode." You say. You shut your eyes tightly in effort to lessen the pain, but it doesn't work. Spencer leans over you and grabs two pills and a glass of water.
"Here, take these. I figured you would need them when you woke up." He says. You grab them from him and take a gulp of water. Once you place the glass back on the nightstand you lay down.
"You didn't answer my question. What part are you on?" You ask. He picks up the book and looks at the cover.
"They're in Hawaii right now." He says. "But part of this book doesn't make sense to me. SCID is very rare but dangerous, so when she rushed outside to save Ollie from his dad she should've had a more serious reaction."
You smile. "I guess you'll have to wait and see how it ends." You say. He smiles back at you and gazes into your eyes.
"How are you feeling mentally?" He asks. You think back to the night before. You were pretty shaken up. You haven't thought about your dad in a while, but after that man assaulted you it all came flooding back again. You could hear your screams and Spencer's. You felt his knife stab into your side as the man grabbed you there. His cold touch was just like his.
"I'm fine." You say. You're obviously lying, but you don't want to talk about it. You're good at compartmentalizing so the feelings will go away by themselves eventually.
"You know you're very smart, but you need to learn that you can't lie to someone who analyzes behavior for a living." He says.
"I know. I just don't want to talk about it." You say quietly.
"Remember what happened last time? You need to talk to someone about it." He says.
"Last time my dad kidnapped and tortured me. This was just some drunk idiot who didn't know how to back off, I'll be fine."
Spencer looks at you with worry. You watch him think as he leans over you.
"But it brought back memories didn't it?" He asks. You shift a little bit and swallow. "That's what happens with stuff like this. I bet you saw your dad when the man attacked you."
You can feel your eyes getting hot. He's right, it was like it was really your dad attacking you. You'll never forget how similar the looks in their eyes were. You try to hold your tears while Spencer stares down at you.
"Maybe. But that was because I was drunk, seriously I'm fine." You say. You manage to hold back the tears, but you look down at your comforter in case he notices that you're hiding your feelings. "On another note, how did I get up here? And where did my clothes go?"
Spencer doesn't speak for a second. He's still giving you that worried look, but you don't acknowledge it. He knows you might get upset if he keeps talking about it so he looks away too.
"I carried you up here from the car." He says. "One of the neighbors thought you were knocked out."
You laugh and look back at him. "I don't remember that. Did I wake up at all?" You ask.
"No. But you did wrap your arms around me." He says.
"And my clothes?"
"I took them off while you slept. They're in the dryer right now, I washed them last night." He says. You smile and continue to gaze at him. You lean forward and a plant a kiss on his lips.
"Thank you. I love you." You say. He smiles.
"I love you more."
You get out of the bed and put one of his t-shirts on. You don't bother putting on pants since you're going to be home all day, and the t-shirt covers your butt. You walk into the bathroom to brush your teeth.
"What made you want to read Everything Everything?" You ask. You hear him get up from the bed.
"I know it's your favorite, and I woke up a little bit before you so I thought why not." He says. He walks behind you and grabs your waist. You smile and start brushing your tongue.
"It's not really your kind of book though, is it?" You say with a mouth full of toothpaste.
"I'm not one for teen romance but the author is pretty good." He says. He grabs his toothbrush and starts to put toothpaste on it. You spit out yours.
"Yeah she's one of my favorites." You say. You gargle some mouth wash and walk out of the bathroom. You put on a pair of fuzzy socks while Spencer brushes his teeth.
"So what do you want to do today?" He asks. You stop and think.
"I'm not sure. How long are we going to be home for?"
"I got you today and tomorrow off." He says. He walks out of the bathroom and sits next to you on the bed. You look at him and smile as you remember that he called your boss last night.
"Oh yeah, that's right." You say. "Did you really have to include the fact that you work for the FBI while you talked to my boss?"
He smiles back at you. "No, but I find it usually gets me what I want."
You give him a sly smile. He's trying to tease you as he looks down at your lips. You lean in slowly like you're going to kiss him. He leans back, but you stop right before your lips touch.
"Not all the time." You whisper. You crawl onto the bed and lay under the covers. He's still sitting on the edge and he smiles at you. You laugh as he jumps toward you and grabs your waist. He rolls you over and laughs with you as he uses his hands too pin you down. He gives you a kiss and you continue to laugh when he lets go.
"You are so controlling!" You say. You smack him with a pillow and he leans over you.
"Come on, you know you love it." He says. You try and hide it, but you smile widely. You lean towards him and kiss him. This one if longer. He smiles through it and you wrap your arm around him when you're done. He lays with you and strokes your hair as you hold him close to you and lay on his chest.
"Remember when we went on cute dates?" You ask.
"Of course I do." He responds.
"I miss those." You say. He's silent, but not for long.
"Good to know." He says. You look up at him and he looks down at you.
"Can you read to me?" You ask. You want to hear his soothing voice speak the romantic words of Nicola Yoon. He smiles at you again.
"Of course gorgeous." He says. He leans over and grabs the book from the nightstand on his side. He opens to the page he's on and you scoot closer. You lay your head on his chest and listen to his heart beat. You swear it got slower as you laid your hand on his stomach. He reads to you, and you close your eyes as you focus on his words. He continues to stroke your hair and you feel yourself move up and down as he breathes. You're so comfortable that you feel your eyes getting heavier...
and heavier....
until Spencer's voice fades away and you're back in that cold, terrifying basement.
