On Saturday you go to work for a few hours, and afterwards you head straight home to get ready for your girls night with Cecilia. You always look forward to these nights because your job takes up a lot of your time- working in psychology will do that to you.
You pick out a black knee length dress with an open back that accentuates your curves a little bit. You keep your hair natural letting it fall past your shoulders and move around, but not so much that it looks messy. You put on a little bit of makeup applying some mascara, concealer, and lip gloss. You add a little bit of blush to complete the look. You reach into your closet and grab a black and gold handbag and slip on some matte black heels. You look in the mirror and make sure nothing looks out of place. Usually you take at least a hour getting ready, but lately you've given up on looking nice to try and catch a guys attention. You dress up a little so you can feel confident and have fun with Cecilia. She always try's to talk you into using that confidence to ask someone out yourself, but you watch and read so much romance that your standards are too high. It's not that they don't deserve you, it's that you want to be with someone who's worth it. That mixed with your social awkwardness and job schedule makes it hard to date. But sometimes when Cecilia goes home with someone, you have a few too many drinks and take a decent looking guy home. The walk of shame the next day always makes you feel low, but it's really the only kind of romantic affection you can get. It's not a sob story, it's just the way things are.
You check your handbag and make sure you have everything- wallet, keys, phone, pepper spray. Everything is in place. You grab a jacket and take out your phone to call Cecilia.
"Hey are you at the club yet?"
"No, I just left my loft so I'm on the way. Are you there?"
"No, I'm just leaving too." You tell her as you walk out of your apartment and down the stairs. "I just wanted to make sure you weren't waiting on me."
"Thanks for checking, but you don't have to. I'm sure I could've found some company if I got there before you."
You laugh at the statement. Cecilia has always been good socially. Her confidence mixed with her good looks and success have always helped her catch the attention of men around her. She hasn't had many boyfriends, but it's not because she can't. She focuses more on her career and improving herself. You've always admired that about her. But like any girl, she needs to be pleasured- hence the occasional guys she takes home.
"Of course, how stupid of me to think otherwise." You say sarcastically. "I'll see you soon."
"See you soon, drive safe."
Hanging up the phone you walk out the doors of your apartment building. You click the button on your keys to unlock your car door and climb inside. You connect your phone to the car's bluetooth and play Houndmouth's song "Sedona". The song makes you think of your mom again. You've missed her a lot lately. She raised you your whole life by herself, but when you got your double major in sociology she decided to move to California. You're happy for her because she's found a great guy and she's happy, but that means less family for you to be around. You still see her on the holidays though.
You arrive at the Golden Gate club about fifteen minutes later. You're lucky enough to find a good parking spot not too far from the entrance. As you walk in, the sound of loud music and chatter fill your ears. It's very crowded, as expected. You pull out your phone to text Cecilia, until you hear a familiar voice.
"Y/n! Over here!"
You look up and see Cecilia waving her hand at you. She's wearing a tight red dress that shows off her cleavage very well, with 4 inch black heels on. That girl loves her shoes. You walk over to her, noticing that she's sitting with two guys. Both are tall, but one is muscular with straighter black hair, olive skin, and soft eyes. The other has curlier brown hair with fuller lips and fair skin. You smile at them both, noticing Cecilia rubbing her thumb on the curly headed ones hand.
"I ran into these gentleman at the bar. They're both single, and this one" she said looking at the straight haired one "is a neurologist. I thought you guys would hit it off."
The man smiles at you and reaches out his hand. "My name's Jacob, it's nice meeting you."
You politely shake his hand. "I'm y/n. It's nice to meet you too." You can't help but look away as he tries to make eye contact, but you know that he's pretty handsome. He's definitely the kinda guy girls would throw themselves over, but not you. You prefer intellect and thoughtfulness over jocky club guys. He has to be smart because he's a neurologist, but by the way he looks at your breasts you can tell he doesn't want to talk about science. You look at Cecilia and motion your head to signal that you need to talk to her."Excuse us for a second, we'll be back with drinks." said Cecilia. She smiles at the curly haired guy.
You take her over to the bar and look at her with annoyance in your eyes."What the fuck Cecilia, I just got here and you're already trying to pair me with some meat-headed show off? What happened to girls night?" You don't want to be angry, but you can feel the emotion growing inside of you. Cecilia looks sorry, but hopeful.
"Look, I know dating guys like this isn't really your thing, but what if he isn't a meat-headed show off? What if he-"
"Cecilia, his name is Jacob." You interrupt. "You know that guys with that name have the biggest ego." You smile at her as the words come out of your mouth.
She laughs. "Fair point. But what I'm trying to say is you have to give people a chance. He may not be Jack Dawson, but he's successful and handsome. Just give it a shot? For me?"
You sigh as you look at her hopeless face, her hands squeezing yours. "Fine."
She squeals in excitement and orders 3 shots of vodka, two beers and a glass of rum for you. You take a big gulp as you two walk back to the table where Jacob and the other dude are sitting. You give him a kind smile, knowing the only reason you're doing this is to make Cecilia happy. Who knows, maybe you'd just fuck him and forget him."Me and Tristan are going to go dance. You guys can join us if you want." Cecilia shoots you a look, obviously wanting you to dance with Jacob. You look at him, and then back at Cecilia and say, "Thanks, but I'm not in the dancing mood." She gives a look of disappointment and disappears into the crowd with Tristan. You're left alone with Jacob, wishing you could just go home, watch Fresh Prince, and never leave your couch again.

An hour later Cecilia comes back with Tristan. She told him she had to go home and feed her dog (she doesn't have a dog) so he asked for her number, but she politely declined and said she was in a hurry. You ran out the door with her not even saying goodbye to Jacob. The last hour with him had been torture.
You and Cecilia run to your car and she gets in the passengers seat. She throws her head back and sighs. "He was one of the most boring scuba diving instructors I've ever met. And I've never met one before." You look over and both of you start to laughing. It was the kind of laugh that you never want to end, where you're laughing so hard you could cry. "Did he seriously say he was a scuba diving instructor?" You ask, still laughing at he thought. She nods slowly and continues to smile.
You look out your windshield and stare at the people walking by. "I don't think Jacob is actually a neurologist. At one point I asked where he went to school and he said 'Harvard I think'." You both start laughing again. Cecilia begins to take the bobby pins in her hair out. "Those were the worst club guys I've ever met in my life." She looks at all of the bobby pins in her hand and dumps them into her handbag. She looks at you apologetically. "I'm sorry I made you hang out with a meat-headed show off."
You smile.
"It's okay. Hanging out with him made me feel smarter than I already am." Cecilia laughs. "Can we go back to your place? I actually want to catch up and talk." You nod and start the car. You blast "...Baby One More Time" by Brittany Spears, and you both sing along as you drive back to your apartment.••••••
