Day Four in Hawaii
•••••Your last two days in Hawaii have been great. On your second day here you guys explored the cities and shops on the beach. You got a little bobble head luau dancer for Penelope, and Spencer got a book about Polynesian culture. You got yourself a beautiful shell necklace that you've been wearing ever since you bought it. After exploring you two went swimming again, except this time you didn't force him to get in the water with you. You mostly relaxed in the sand with him.
On the second day you two took a tour of the old volcanoes. You kept your distance from the active ones like Kilauea and Maunaloa, but you had a lot of fun taking pictures and learning more about the non active ones like Kohala and Hualalai. Spencer had a great time and now has a small bag filled with rocks from the volcanoes he plans to take home.
"Obviously we have extrusive igneous rocks in Virginia, but not like these." He said as he collected them. "If I were to add enough heat and pressure I could turn these rocks directly into magma. That's pretty incredible right?"
After asking him how he planned on doing that, he brushed off the question and continued to pick up the rocks. You smiled and took pictures of him, wanting to capture how happy he looked. Once you guys were done there you went out to lunch at a restaurant on the beach. The food was delicious.
You just woke up, and today you and Spencer plan on staying in. Tonight you guys are going to a real Luau and you can't wait.
"What are you most excited for about the Luau?" Asks Spencer. You guys are sitting on the patio drinking smoothies that he picked up for you.
"The hula and the food." You say. "And the fire twirling, that will be an interesting thing to see up close."
"I agree. You know in ancient times Luaus were held to celebrate victory in battle, a bountiful harvest, and significant life events." He says. He finished his book while you two were at the beach and hasn't been able to stop spitting out facts. You don't mind it though.
"That's interesting. What's the reason for the one we're going to?" You ask.
"It's the September Equinox." He says. "They're having a celebration to say goodbye to the summer and to welcome the upcoming colder months."
"It doesn't really get cold here though, does it?"
"No. The average high in September here can be up to ninety degrees with lows of seventy five." He says.
"You should be a weatherman." You say. "You would look really hot in a suit."
"I don't know about being on television though, that's a little too much pressure."
"You have to go on television at work sometimes, it won't be any different. Except you won't be saving peoples lives you'll just be that guy that people will see walking down the street and say 'Hey, isn't that the guy from tv?'"
He chuckles at your joke and takes a sip of his smoothie. You admire how good he looks right now. He's wearing a colorful button down floral shirt, but the first few buttons are loose to show his chest. The ends of his hair have gotten lighter in the sun and although he doesn't like to admit it his skin has gotten a little more tan.
"Do you know how handsome you are?" You ask. He looks up and smiles shyly. "I'm serious, you're so attractive it drives me crazy."
He smiles and looks down at his lap shyly. "Thank you." He says. "Have you ever heard of the word kalopsia?"
"No, but I'm intrigued to learn about it."
"It's an Ancient Greek word deriving from the words kalos that means good, beautiful, or lovely and ópsis which means viewing. The word is used to describe the delusion of seeing things as more beautiful than they really are."
