When using the Dragon Aspect shout, the ethereal "armor" that surrounds the dovahkiin is a projection of their dragconic soul. This goes so deep though, that once the dragonborn unlocks their true power of the shout, they'll even have a pair of wings like a dovah, that with practice, can be utilized. Furthermore, the color of the spectral scales is a mirror of what the dovahkiin's dragon self would look like. For instance, Miraak's surprisingly enough, glow a bright golden like the sun.
