Month 1: You’re at school, preparing for the last of the exams. It’s been stressing you out all year. This was the moment. And on top of the exams, was Senior Prom. You didn’t even have a date yet which was upsetting because everyone was expecting you to. You were one of the most lovable and popular people at school, so if you showed up to Senior Prom alone, you knew that people were going to give you dirty looks.
You decided not to think about it- yet. Instead, you ruffled your hair, sighed, and tried to answer the question. You’d been stuck on it for a long time, and to be honest, you were never the biggest math whiz.
After a while, your eyes slowly went to the desk across from you. It was Niall’s desk. He was already on the second-to-last question. Recovering from your shock, you glanced up at the teacher who was busy with grading the study guides, and then back to Niall.
Niall was that one kid that everyone knew, not because he was popular, but because he was such a dedicated student. He also was the only guy in the school that was Irish and so quiet. He was that geeky gentleman type. There was one. Only one in the entire school- and he was it.
Very slowly and carefully, you leaned over. “Hey, Niall?” you whispered.
In a heartbeat, his blonde head flicked upwards to look at you, and those already large blue eyes got even larger. “M-Me?” he questioned, pointing a finger to his chest.
You nodded. “Do you know the answer to number seven?”
"Yeah, it’s um, c," he replied with a fading smile.
You weren’t sure what was wrong with him all of the sudden, but you sat back in your own desk again and then circled the letter ‘c’. “Thanks Niall.”
"You’re welcome." But he didn’t sound like he meant it. In fact, he didn’t even look at you.
Month 2: There were only six weeks until exams, and then eight weeks until Senior Prom. You still hadn’t found a date, and you still were shaky on the math portion of the study guide. Unfortunately for you, Niall had moved seats spontaneously, all the way to the back of the class. You felt bad because it felt like it was your fault. It seemed like he was mad at you for asking him for help on your math. Maybe he felt offended because that’s the only reason why anyone talked to him- everyone just wanted answers to their homework or something from them.
You were sitting at the picnic with your two friends, Maura and Lily, when they both brought up the subject of Senior Prom.
"Well, when are you going to ask a guy?" Lily asked.
"Or when are you going to stop turning guys down? You’re the only one who doesn’t want to find a date.” Maura added.
"I’ll find a date when I find a date. Guys, it’s not that bad if I go by myself," you defended yourself. For some strange reason, the gave each other funny looks and then looked back at you.
"We had a feeling you’d say that," Maura smirked. Just then, Lily disappeared.
"What are you guys doing?" you sighed. Maura didn’t answer, so you just looked away and continued nibbling on your sandwich. But you stopped quickly to smile at Niall who had taken a seat behind you. He didn’t smile back. He didn’t even see you.
Lily returned, but this time, with a friend. You couldn’t help but blush and almost choke on your sandwich when you saw Lily standing next to Matt, one of the hottest kids in school. “Matt here, has something to say,” Lily said.
"Jackie, will you go to Senior Prom with me?"
"U-Um, I-I…"
"She’d love to!" Maura said excitedly.
