• November 21, 2018 (One day before Thanksgiving) •

It was a day before Thanksgiving and both Zachary and Aviana were working on their Thanksgiving speeches. They were step-siblings but just as close as if they had been born to the same parents and spent their whole lives together.

Zachary was looking at the paper on the desk in front of him through bespectacled brown eyes, twirling a pen in hand as if thinking about what he was going to write. Thanksgiving dinner was going to be held at the Kent family's place where both their family and the Danvers were to be present.

"You're thankful for having Kara in your life? Such a sap..." Aviana read the words he had just written on the blank paper, craning her neck over his shoulder, "you could have said you're thankful you survived that explosion. I had zero hope you were going to make it."

He looked up, "and well who made sure I survived the explosion?"

She shrugged, "Supergirl."

"Exactly."

"Stop right there, one more word in praise of your super girlfriend and I'm bolting through the door."

"Please do," he gestured towards the door, "give me the honor of not being in your company for at least ten minutes.

"In case you're forgetting, you're the one who asked me to help," she shrugged, "but if you want me to leave, sure." However, she stopped seeing him write more on his paper. "On second thought, what have you written so far?"

He was looking at the starting line disapprovingly, "I met Kara Danvers in high school... God, that seems so much like a teen fic, could this get any more cliché?"

"You met her at a high school homecoming," she added, brown curls bouncing as she sat back on the bed, crossing her legs, "cliché level soaring to a 100% now. And she spilled her orange juice all over you after which you had to discard your shirt. So then you, my absolute nuisance of a stepbrother, were forced to attend homecoming shirtless, oh but with your coat on top, sorry about that. I forgot."

He held his head in his hands as if thoroughly disappointed, "Aviana, when I said I need a good opening line, I hadn't meant it was an invitation for you to make me embarrassed."

She smiled mischievously, "hey, you don't need to give me an invitation to embarrass you. I would gladly do it anywhere, anytime, free of cost."

"I know you embarrass me all the time but please don't use scenarios that did not happen," he interjected, cutting off a line he had just written.

She looked at him startled, "wait that hadn't happened?"

"Of course not! I was not shirtless at the homecoming dance, I just had a huge orange stain up front that the coat couldn't hide either."

"I remember now, ugh, the orange stain looked terrible. You shirtless wouldn't have been that mawkish."

He rolled his eyes wearily before politely remarking, "Ava, shut up please."

"Zachary Jonah Smith, you are going to hell for being a hypocrite. Because only a hypocrite would ask someone to shut up politely."

"Thanks, I know already," he mumbled, focusing back on the paper in his hands, "I bet you'll say that in your speech. Aviana Lawson is thankful that her stepbrother is going to hell. That's it, isn't it?"

"Stop being an obnoxious little rat or I'll kick you down the stairs with zero regrets about your poor leg," she snapped back and the threat seemed to work as Zack seemingly shut up for some time.

"What are you thankful for though?" He asked at last because even though he might never admit it, he felt awkward whenever she stopped talking and silence gripped the two. He enjoyed her continuous chatter but would never tell her that knowing her ego would skyrocket and she would not stop pestering him.

She shrugged, "a lot of things except for your existence."

"Ouch."

"Deal with it."

But the door opened making both of them look in the direction of the door to see Kara entering. Zach's features lit up with a smile though he quickly hid the paper he was writing on under his book.

"Kara, what a pleasant surprise!" Aviana had left her spot and engulfed Kara into a friendly embrace.

"I heard you guys are writing Thanksgiving speeches so I thought I may as well join you two," she spoke up, azure eyes locking with Zach's brown irises.

Aviana shrugged, "nice excuse, try it somewhere else. I know you came here to see if he's still alive. And unfortunately yes, alive and breathing. Such a pain..."

Kara laughed, knowing that Aviana didn't actually mean it, she just had a habit of making it seem that she hated Zach while deep down she cared for him just like a sister would.

"So Zach, how have you been?"

Before Zach could answer, Aviana spoke up, "yes tell her, Zach, how I was one second away from throwing you down the stairs. Then you would have been in an awful state."

"Wait what?"

"Of course not, she's joking," Zach spoke up immediately, "she wouldn't do that. Right, Ava?"

"I mean if you stay in your limits then of course I won't," Aviana replied, eyes twinkling in mischief as usual. "By the way, Kara, do you know what Zach's thankful for?"

Zachary realized she was about to make a dive for his speech so he quickly retrieved the paper from under the book and backed off, "Aviana please, let it be till Thanksgiving. Everyone will know tomorrow."

But it seemed as if she was having none of it as she turned to Kara and remarked, "I doubt that he'll change his speech."

"Of course, I won't do that."

"Would do so. I might not have known you since you were three but unfortunately, I've lived with you for way longer than I wanted. So yeah, I know you'll change the speech."

And taking the fact to her advantage that Zach couldn't probably run after her, she snatched the paper from his hand despite his protest and took refuge behind Kara.

"Ava, don't...!"

"I'm not gonna read it, Kara will."

Kara noticed how Zach's face had gone an adorable pink so when Aviana handed her the paper, instead of reading it out loud, she folded the page and stepped closer to Zach, putting it back in his pocket, "it's okay, I would rather hear it from you tomorrow."

Aviana looked quite disappointed, "I hate to admit it but you two are too cute for your own good... Kara, I could probably say I liked you better when you were not dating this goofus but whatever... That would be a lie and unlike Zach, I don't intend to go to hell for being a hypocrite."
