Luciano's POV
*
She kissed me.
Riley.
The talkative and hyperactive Riley kissed me.
And hugged me.
And kept repeating 'you're okay' while hugging me and sobbing into my chest, making me feel so much suffocation.
Those last words upset me most of all.
'You're okay.'
After the attack, I called one of my men, Manuel and told him to come pack the dead up and clear the area right away while I drove to my house.
To say Manuel was angry would be an understatement, because he was one of my closest men. He didn't like the fact that I didn't tell the organization I would be arriving today but it had to be done that way.
He didn't know I would be arriving today. No one knew apart from the men I emailed and bought a car from and the car had even been bought under one of my American names, not my real name. Also, Keanu and Dennis knew I was coming. No other person had been told.
That spelled danger for the person that orchestrated the attack.
I got up and checked the time again. It had just been twenty minutes since the doctor went in there but it felt like an eternity.
Ignoring his instructions for me to stay outside, I strolled in to know what was going on in there. I was a patient man and playing by the rules was how we men were brought up in my household.
But I couldn't stay patient on this case.
I'd checked her body thoroughly, she wasn't shot. What made her kiss me? What made her cry and get worried about my safety?
I opened the door and left it ajar, walking around the bed to where Leonardo my doctor here in Italy and my very good friend was sitting, writing something in a pink jotter.
Who uses pink jotters except women?
I ignored him and felt the girl's forehead.
Leonardo looked up to give me an annoyed look. "I asked you to stay outside."
"Why? I brought her here and to her, I'm her guardian."
"Do you know what you did? You knocked her out. What guardian does that to his ward? That was a dangerous move on your part." He told me sternly but I just stared at him impassively.
It had been long since someone spoke to me this way. The last person that did so got a bullet downloaded into her skull. But I knew Leo, he wasn't afraid of me. He had seen me at my worse and best times and he was a good friend who wanted the best for me.
He was mi famiglia.
Still, I narrowed my eyes at him. "Don't use that tone with me, know your place."
"My apologies, your grace. I shouldn't have spoken that way to the glorious 'capo di tutti capi'. The most fearsome and dangerous of them all." He rolled his eyes and jotted something down again.
"What exactly is wrong with her? She should've regained consciousness by now."
"Based on what you told me, she suffered from shock. Has she gone through something this serious before?"
Pinching my lips together, I exhaled. Of course she had. That was what brought her under my protection in the first place.
"Yes."
