Chapter 12 I Have Borderline Personality Disorder

Ringmaster lifts his hand up in the air like the power of God, saying, "Okay ladies and gentlemen, settle down. I want to introduce you to my favorite part of the show...It includes electricity,'' Ringmaster creepily wiggles his fingers as if he knows a secret and isn't going to share.

The audience quiets down, and Ringmaster continues, "It is my pleasure to introduce my good friend Dr. Petite." Ringmaster flings out his arm to the right to show the audience Dr. Petite, who is no taller than four foot nine, in a white lab coat, with a ghoulish smile upon his face.

"Bonjour ladies and noblemen in the crowd, I am here tonight to show you something spectacular, so amazing, and so mesmerizing you'll forget why you came here tonight..." the doctor pauses. "Let's get this show started..." Dr. Petite claps as the stage goes dark; the audience gasps and small children are heard crying in the background. The darkness feels like forever, and everyone finally quiets down and all that the Harriets can hear is the audiences' shallow breathing, still scared of what is coming next.

The lights flicker back on and a bearded man in scrubs comes out screaming, "Doctor! Doctor! We need you in here now!"

"Ah my friends, I've got to go to work." Dr. Petite waves and runs backstage. A black curtain raises up suddenly, and the audience can see a person who appears wounded on an operating table. Operating Room nurses are poking and prodding the limp patient, checking vital signs and CNA's are scrambling around the table making it difficult to see what is happening. The audience is in shock, super quiet, holding their breath.

"BP is dropping Doctor." The heart monitor beeps louder. Someone knocks into a tray and the tools clash to the ground, making the audience bounce on the edges of their seats.

"Sinus rhythm!" another nurse yells as he continues CPR.

"Smith! Stop compressions!" Everyone slows down to watch the lifeless body, and the monitor showing the flatline signal, still beeping louder, longer.

"Stats are dropping!" one nurse shouts.

"One milligram of Epi. Now!" the head nurse blurts out.

"Amy, charge to two hundred!" Dr. Petite shrieks into the air.

Dr. Petite screams, "CLEAR!" as he puts the paddles onto the limp body. Everyone jumps back, even the audience. The lights flicker because of the energy's electrical surge. Gasps and "Ooohs" rise through the crowd at the sudden flash of lights almost like lightning bolts. The nurses get back to poking and prodding the patient, working as quickly as they can to save the girl.

Her body flings up into the air at least three inches off the operating table. Ringmaster laughs. "Well that's one way to get you going!"

Some awkward chuckles are heard as the body falls back to the table and Ginger says, "How dare you say that about that poor girl?"

"Oh, hush now, she's gonna be fine!" Ringmaster replies waving his hand in a nonchalant manner as Ginger sits back down, still miffed. The Harriets are concerned for the patient's safety but do not comment any further. They sit and watch the scene play out.

Others start booing and throwing food toward the stage at the ringmaster. He knows the person will be fine.

"All right! All right! Calm down, ladies and gents. Dr. Petite is the best doctor in the world. Let the doctor and nurses work their magic," Ringmaster says, annoyed.

The audience quiets down again.

"Amy, again two hundred!" Dr. Petite yells. She turns the dial on the creaky machine and Dr. Petite shouts, "CLEAR!"
