The three of us were now settled down in the bunker and Jacob was still outside. He'd better hurry before he gets himself killed...

"Alice, what did you do before all of this?" John asked me, trying to get his mind off of his only brother outside while the Collapse is happening.

"I was practicing to be a mortician before I quit mortuary school." I stated with a sigh.

"Ew." The Baptist's face filled with disgust.

"It was actually pretty interesting." I chuckled anxiously, my eyes on my boots. "Pays good too. I shouldn't have quit."

"Why did you quit for?" John inquired, gazing at me incredulously.

I cleared my throat, "Well— uh... Nathan somehow convinced me to quit mortuary school and move out here in the country with him. And I fucking did." I explained. "Then, Whitehorse hired him as a goddamn Deputy. The reason why he was hired on so quick was because Earl was his uncle, so... Yeah, Nathan had some connections. And plus, the Hope County Sheriff's Department was short-staffed."

"Ah." John replied nonchalantly, crossing his leg over the other. "I see. And you just willingly quit school for that piece of shit?"

"John." Faith warned her brother, her eyes still red from continuously crying over Joseph.

"No, no. He's fine, Faith." I responded and glanced at her with a small smile; then, I looked at John. "Well, he was good to me for a while... But after we came to Hope County, and after I came out to him, he was just an asshole to me. For no fucking reason." I spoke gruffly, thinking about that dead dickhead. "That prick deserved to die." Suddenly, Jacob walked inside the room with huge new burns on his arm and laid the shovel in the corner. "Jacob?"

"What?" Jacob grumbled, glaring at the shovel as his eyes were glossy. "I did it. I buried him. Now I'm heading to bed." He curtly and harshly informed us, all the while making his way to his own bedroom.

"Should I go check on him?" John questioned worriedly.

I shook my head, "I got it. You two need to rest. I'll be back." I smiled at Faith and John before I followed the eldest Seed sibling to his room. Quietly, I made it and leaned against his doorframe. Jacob had his back to me as his sat at his desk in the corner.

"Leave me alone, Alice." Jacob grunted, scribbling something down in a journal of some kind. "I'm busy."

"Can I at least come in and talk? I won't be a second." I tried to persuade him to let me to talk him. How did he even hear me walk in earlier? I thought I was pretty damn quiet...

Jacob mumbled a low 'Fine' and continued to write or draw or some shit in his notebook.

Silently, I sat down beside him on his bed and gazed at him. "Let me treat your arm."

"I know how to do it, Alice. I was in the army." He replied bluntly, not looking up from his journal.

"Please."

Jacob finally looked up at me, but he was suspicious, "Why do you want to help me so bad?"

"I don't know. Just let me." I stated sternly with my arms crossed.

Jacob sighed in frustration, "My stuff's in the cabinet under the sink." He pointed at the walk-in bathroom, laid his pen down on his desk, and shut his journal closed aggressively before I walked in there to retrieve the items I needed to treat his first-degree burns.
