Louis was a mess, to say the least. Harry couldn't talk to him anymore, and he could sense the weakness in his heart, although he knew that Harry still loved him. Days pass by, even weeks. It seemed that Louis had lost count and now he was running out of time. He knew that this was it, he was going to surprise Harry, and he would of course ask Anne's blessing.
He grinned for what seemed like the first time in ages, he slowly stood up and lightly kissed Harry's forehead before standing to his feet and he walked to the door, Anne was soon taking his place in the chair and she took Harry's hand in her own.
He loved the mother-son bond that they had. He took a deep breath then, heading to the main entrance, and waving at the receptionist before walking out to the parking lot. It didn't take but a second or two for Louis to spot his best friend's black Mercedes pulling up and Louis for some reason almost forgot how gloomy the atmosphere was.
"Mate, you really want to do this? You know he may not pull through this."
Of course Zayn. Make the gloomy setting just doleful, appreciate the help.
Louis bit back the words his heart was longing to say. He knew that Harry wasn't the same, it wasn't a secret that Harry probably wouldn't make it. Yet, he chose to do this. He couldn't believe after all this time, this was finally going to be it, he was going to place the ring on his finger, and Harry would officially be a Tomlinson.
"Sorry, I know this is all so much for you, and Anne too."
Zayn gripped the steering wheel and stopped at the red light, he must've made things awkward between Louis and himself, but it was the truth. No one really knew how long Harry had, not even Harry himself realized, and the truth of it was he was afraid. Not that he would tell anyone, he needed to be brave for his Lou.
"Whatever happens, you know I'm here for you right?" Zayn tried to pull off a grin but even he was saddened by the news.
Without a doubt, Louis knew how Zayn felt towards Harry, and even though they were only friends they seemed to have a strong bond with one another. Well until Harry moved into Louis's apartment. Something along the lines of Harry being immature and Zayn was the grown-up who made decisions based on what needed to be done.
That was all rubbish, having a little fun in the kitchen didn't make the lad immature, in fact to Louis, it brought out the best in Harry. The way his emerald eyes lit up like a Christmas tree, the endless smile he couldn't get out of his head, and his laughter. He could rewind it over and over. Memories of happiness, something not even Zayn had control over.
"I'll be fine, Z, I don't need anyone to give me pity or sympathy." And for your information, Harry is still alive, may not be well but... my god... just stop talking like he's dead."
It was getting a little easier each time speaking out for himself. But at the same time, Louis was wanting to bottle all of his thoughts up and allow the ocean to eat it up. Nobody really needed to know how he felt, it was for Harry to know only. Oh right, Harry. He was the one who was there when no one else was. His best friend even when Zayn blew him off to hang out with who was supposedly just his best friend, whatever.
"Hey, can we stop for a coffee or something?" Why did he keep drinking coffee like a fish? The man needed sleep to be sleeping, even in his dozing state of mind, he knew it.
Zayn could only shake his head, he knew better than to tell Louis the truth. What were facts of the matter would in fact set him off. It would be better to keep his mouth shut and just get him the damn coffee.
"Y-Yeah of course we can." Zayn smiled sooner or later someone was going to have to break it to him that coffee was not the solution, instead, they both rode in the car, from time to time Zayn would glance at Louis just to check on the lad.
"Do you know what you want, Lou?" He smiled, looking from the passenger seat then back to where the menu shows different flavors. He did of course and usually, he would get Harry's favorite just because Harry was a simple man when it came to coffee.
Louis couldn't help but become silent, his eyes somehow glancing down to his shiny trainers and he let his lower lip tremble. "I'll get what I always get." He mumbled, trying to conceal the tears, almost like a girl would hide in the stall of a bathroom. Except, here he was trying to be strong, not just for himself, but for Harry.
"It's Harry's drink, in case you don't remember." Louis lightly snaps, The Vanilla Latte, the temperature is cold, with two shots of caramel."
Was Zayn supposed to feel completely out of sorts, no, probably not? But the lad was daft and it was obvious.
"Okay." Zayn nodded, with approval, soon ordering Louis's specific drink and then placed his own drink in as well.
Before Louis even knows it, they are sitting in the parking lot and Zayn is handing him his drink.
Louis stares at it, deep in thought, and his eyes well up with tears again. He couldn't be strong, he hated that he was expected to be the strong one. How can he be strong when the love of his life, his best friend in the whole world, and the rock to his tidal wave. But mostly he was the one who made everything okay when it was all going to shit.
"Louis... mate." Zayn snapped his fingers to get Louis to come out of his daze and all that earned him was a glare that could send slicing daggers. " Shut up, Zayn." He gripped the drink slowly, "You don't understand, stop trying to understand okay? His words hissed like fire and he didn't even care. "My best friend and love of my life is dying and here I am drinking his drink like everything is just baking cupcakes... you can't just hand me a drink and say drink."
Zayn sighs, trying to understand, even though Louis was right. There was no way he could understand how Louis felt. He wasn't going to understand the way two best friends ended up falling in love. He wasn't there when it happened, but he remembered Louis boasting about his first kiss, and Harry couldn't stop smiling, it was too obvious. Like everyone knew. Pfft. Zayn kinda wanted that.
