Your laugh
Echoes down the hallway
Crawls into my hollow chest
Spreads over the emptiness
It's bliss– Halsey, Drive
. . . .
"Harry? Violet? Lunch is ready?"
Once we hear Anne's soothing voice and the pattering of Lilly's feet on the hardwood floor, we immediately click into overdrive to yank our clothes on as quick as humanly possible.
"Daddy? Come eat with us!"
Lilly's shadow lurks underneath the door and once Harry's finished buckling his belt, he checks his hair in the mirror then opens the door. Lilly runs straight towards me and leans against my legs whilst staring up at her father.
"Will you two be joining us for lunch?" It just faintly seems as if she knows what we were doing two minutes ago, but that huge grin sparkles on her face as she looks back and forth between us.
"Uh, yeah. We were just looking at old photo albums." Harry wipes off his hands on his jeans as if there was dust on them.
"Then how are all of the albums in the den?" She smirks mischievously and holds her hand out for Lilly. The two disappear down the steps, and I turn towards Harry with wide eyes.
"Okay, now you have a reason to be nervous around my parents."
"I've always had a reason to be nervous around them, but now it's on a whole other level."
"Let's just go down and act as nothing happened."
He takes my hand and massages my knuckles with his thumb as we walk into a very modern kitchen.
The theme of it is white and light, baby blues with freshly painted cabinetry and pristine, white marble counters and a wood countertop on the island as well as updated appliances. A breakfast bar is attached to the island where Lilly is sat with a plate of macaroni and cheese with a glass of lemonade in her tiny hands.
"There's macaroni and cheese and some fresh watermelon."
Anne squeezes my shoulder then takes a seat on the stool beside Lilly. Harry briefly looks at me just as confused about his mother's behavior as I am, but he brushes it off and serves the both of us some lunch.
She takes a bite of watermelon and looks at Harry with her head slanted just a tad. "You look so handsome with your new haircut. I still can't believe you cut it. He would never let me touch his hair when he was little."
"Mum, it was the nineties; you were pretty much trying to keep the mullet trend alive."
"It was in style back then."
I don't understand. You would think that she'd be embarrassed that we had sex in her house, but she's not acting like it. I figured she would demand us to grow up and to never do that again, but she's being way too calm and collected right now. It's beginning to scare me a bit.
