"You deserve to be happy."

I met up with Minho after sliding the necklace over my head and letting it rest around my neck. I didn't talk to Minho or Gally as the three of us started to sprint towards where the berg was flying. Every time I thought back to Newt, I remembered that he could be dead right now and I wouldn't know.

So I ran faster.

Once we saw the berg land, it was easy to get to it. We ran up a couple of floors, ran past corpses. But none of that bothered me because Newt was dying. And I was going to save him.

"Y/N??" I heard a familiar voice yell as we approached. A cough came up to my throat causing me to lose it on the spot. "Woah what's wrong with her?!" Lia yelled at Minho as he ran past me and to Lia who held the blue vial of the medicine.

"She's got the flare," Minho said. Lia started screaming no as if that would cure me. I wish it would. He hugged Lia once he gave him the vial.

"Give it to Y/N, she needs it," Lia said. Minho looked back at me contemplating it.

I shook my head through my coughs, black goo spilling out of my lungs and out of my mouth. "NO," I screamed. I didn't mean to. "WE NEED TO GET TO NEWT."

Minho nodded, respecting my decision even though I could tell he was hesitant. The three of us started running but footsteps behind us gathered. Lia, Fry, and Brenda came after us too.

We started running the course of where we had just run, searching every crevice to find Thomas and Newt.

Well, we did.

Brenda and Lia were the first to arrive.

When the rest of us arrived, I automatically knew something was wrong. Lia turned around, tears swelled in her eyes. "TURN HER AROUND!" She yelled at Gally, Fry, and Minho.

"Oh hell no," I said when the words escaped her mouth. I knew what had happened. Fry tried to come up and turned me around but I shoved him back. "NO!" I screamed as I shoved past Brenda and Lia.

I stood in absolute shock as I stared down at him. His lifeless body just lying there. A knife buried in his chest.

I sprinted towards him, falling to my knees next to him. I grabbed his coat and shook him. "Newt, wake up. This isn't funny." I whispered, my teeth chattering and body tensing. "NEWT!" I screamed. His eyes were empty. Minho came up next, falling to his knees next to me. Then Lia.

*Spoilers for Crank Palace*

Memories of his and my life flooded back as I stared at him.

"Newt," I said softly as I pressed a hand to feel his pulse. Nothing. "Newt, I hope you can hear me. We don't have much time. We tried to save you, I give you my word. Newt, listen to me. There are things you need to know." A fresh memory I'd just remembered "Sonya is your sister, and she's alive. I know you think that your life wasn't as important as the rest, that somehow you were a waste because you're not immune." Minho and Lia tried to speak to me but I brushed them off. "Oh, Newt." I choked on my words. "I'm so sorry. Just know this- Sonya is immune and you- well you aren't. And neither am I. I have your note, Newt." I reassured him. "I'll read it. And if it's my last act on this God-forsaken planet, I'll get it to the rest of the gladers. They need to know what you remembered."

I was sobbing now, my eyes were blurry to the point that I could barely see anyone or anything.

"LEAVE!" I screamed at all of them. My voice was distorted and angry. I'm about to take the next step past gone. "Minho, you and you alone, come back in half an hour. I'll leave something for you. I just- need to do something first." He looked at me and shook his head. "Please." It was less of a request and more of an order.

He finally took a shaking breath and nodded. He pulled me into a tight hug, one I didn't return. Why? I don't know. "See ya later, shank." I smiled. It wasn't goodbye.

Once he gathered everyone up and left, I looked back down to Newt. He looked so peaceful.

I reached for the note capsule on the necklace and twisted open the metal cap. Inside a note was there. I had expected that. I unfolded the paper and read it word for word.

You deserve to be happy.

It had said on the last line.

"I know," I sobbed as I folded it back into a roll, stuffing it back into the capsule. "And you deserved to be alive. Always putting others first... I don't know how you did it. But I do know that I thank you for it. I thank you for always being there for me. For always hugging me, holding my hand, telling me it's going to be ok even when it's not. Thank you for rescuing my ass thirty times. I love you. I always will. But we won't be separated for long. I'm becoming a crank." Saying the words hurt more than any knife would. "And I can't risk giving it to anyone else. So, I know what I have to do."

There's a shard of glass not too far away.

I won't explain further, whoever is reading this. Maybe it's Minho. In that case, hey shank. How's it going? Hope you don't miss me too badly. Maybe it's Lia. Hey, I know we didn't know each other long but I feel like we would've been really close. Or Brenda or Tommy. Maybe Fry, by the way, I'm really gonna miss your soup in the after-life.

So, doesn't matter who's reading this journal. Just know, I didn't die in vain. It was peaceful. And I love all of you. You were the only family I had. And I thank you for that.
