"HEY, WE GOT A RUNNER!"
The first set of mechanic doors slid open pouring sunlight into the box. Everyone crowded around, a few snickers came from some people. I stood next to Newt who had an amused look on his face as well but something was wrong. A weight in the pit of my stomach, a feeling in my gut, something was off.
A few boys opened the second lid and Gally walked to the edge of it.
"Ok, go get him." A boy encouraged Gally who jumped down shortly after. The boy had black hair and was wearing a blue shirt. He scooted back, breathing heavily, scared like everyone else was when they first arrived.
"Day one greenie." I heard Gally say from inside the box. "Rise and shine." Zart lowered down a rope with a loop tied at the end. At the last keeper meeting, we decided to use rope instead of dragging the greenies out of the box. The box put his right foot in the rope still needed some help from Gally. Once he was up, Gally shoved him into the dirt. A chorus of laughs and sneers erupted from them.
"Kid looks like a slopper to me."
"I could use some help in the kitchen."I could tell the boy was terrified because he scrambled to his feet and ran, tripping over himself.
"HEY, WE GOT A RUNNER!" Zart called after the raven-haired boy.
"Yeah look at him go." Another one laughed. There was no doubt about it, he was fast. He could be a runner-
Then his legs got caught in themselves sending the greenie flying straight towards the ground. He rolled in the grass receiving a laugh from everyone, including me.
The boy paused his gaze traveling up the wall. I knew his shock. He just saw the walls.
"Nice. Take it all in, be here a long time." Clint yelled at him. I doubt he was paying attention to their cat-calls anymore. It didn't stop them though. The boy stood up staring at everything.
"Come on back." The boys continued to call. The greenie didn't move, his jaw practically on the floor. Everyone knew the same sense of deja vu he was having right now.
He must've stood there for a while because Alby whispered something to Clint before he walked away. Clint nodded and started jogging towards the boy. The rest of the gladers fell quiet just watching the interaction. They exchanged some words before Clint grabbed the back of the boy's shirt and pulled him with him. The boy struggled for a bit but Clint threw him into the pit and closed the door.
He looked back at the group. "Y/N!" He called. "He's all yours." I nodded and said goodbye to Newt before jogging up to the slammer. It's the most secure place in the glade, safe from almost anything. It's where we hold the people who've done something before we decide what to do.
I come from the side of the slammer before saying, "Hey." The boy scrambled backward as I crouch down in front of it. "Hey there, Green Bean," I say. "You're not gonna run again, ok?" The boy doesn't respond but the look on his face is a yes. I nod my head and let out a little laugh. "Good." I move to the lock and fumble with it before it pops open. I take it off and open the large wooden door.
I crouch down again. "My names Y/N." I softly smile. "Now can you tell me anything about yourself? Who you are, where you came from? Anything at all?" The boy looks like he's about to speak and I hold my breath hoping he does.
He shakes his head and sniffles and for the first time, he speaks. "No." Was all he said.
"Can you tell me your name?" I push hoping he was one of the rare ones that knew it.
"No." The boy bounces his hands. His face twists into fear and sadness. "I uh- can't remember anything." He breaths out and I push my lips in a line knowing how he felt. "Why can't I remember anything?"
"It's ok." I say hoping to calm him down. His breathing picks up in an unnatural pace. "Hey, relax." I remind him. "Relax. It's normal. It happens to us all." I feel a hand on my shoulder. It's Alby.
"I got it from here." He whispered as I nod and stand up. "Go get Newt, yeah?"
"Yup." Then I start walking away towards the gardens. The Glade is busier than ever which is weird especially on a greenie day. I pass by a few goats the Winston was moving today and say hey to Clint and Jeff.
I finally make it to the gardens where I scan the area trying to find Newt. I walk over to him, his familiar white sweatshirt giving away where he was.
"Newt," I say. "Come on, Alby wants you to meet the greenie."
