I laid silently in my bed, reliving the events of last night. After Jones had pushed that bastard into the pool, my mind went blank. I remember Jones storming off, Rose Summer running after her, and Daniel yelling at her and then me.
I pulled the covers over my head, hoping to hide from the world. However, the universe had other plans for me.
"Rue! Rose Summer is here!" I heard my mom call out for me. I groaned as I got up,
"Coming!" I quickly got dressed, and by dressed I mean I put a jacket on top of my PJs.
I ran down the hallway, not wanting to have my mom yell at me again. My mom and Rose Summer sat silently in the living room. My mom looked up at me and muttered something under her breath. I felt slightly embarrassed seeing Rose Summer in a nice jumper sitting in my tiny apartment living room. I sighed as I walked over to sit next to her.
Rose Summer got up and coughed, "Well, I wanted to formally invite you both over to brunch at my house!" I looked at her like she was crazy. After what happened last night, I was in no mood for a "bunch party", especially if my mom was involved.
After a pause of silence my mom said, "We'd love to, dearie!" it almost looked as though she was a kind person.

"Hurry up, Rue! I don't want to be late because of you!" My mom screamed. I looked at myself in the mirror, my mom had forced me to wear this stuffy dress. I cursed Rose Summer for inviting us to this hell show. "Why don't you dress like this more often! If you weren't wearing those horrible boy clothes, you might get a boyfriend." My mom lectured me as I walked out of my room. The talk continued as we walked to the car, it would be a long car ride.
~yet another time skip~
I sighed as I walked into Rose Summer's perfect little house. I soon realized that I wasn't the only one forced into this. Honey, Mrs. Miller, Jones, Mr. Jones, and Rose Summer's siblings were all there. I raced over to where Rose Summer stood talking to her brother, Aiden. I grabbed her arm and pulled her into a corner "What the actual fuck?" I asked her.
"I thought it would be a nice distraction! Something to get Jones mind off of... well you know." She smiled at me, "N-nice dress though!"
I sighed and let go of Rose Summer's arm. I'll just have to suffer through the next 2 hours.
We all sat down at the dinning table. We sat in silence for a while. Honey and her mom were wearing matching tan dresses, they were embroidered with the most beautiful lace flowers. Jones was wearing a blue dress and her hair was in pretty braids. Her father wore a tux that looked more expensive then my entire apartment. Rose Summer wore the same pink jumper from this morning, but she topped it with a big bow. The rest of Rose Summer's siblings wore dresses and casual suits, though nothing about them looked casual.
Rose Summer's sister, Amy, brought out an assortment of dishes. It was her current aspiration to be a chief, Rose Summer and I had bet how long before she got bored of it. Bread, casserole, and the works were placed across the table.
"Well aren't y'all talkative today." Amy mocked. Rose Summer swatted her sister, and nervously smiled at the rest of us.
"You have a very lovely home." Honey's mother smiled, trying to break the silence.
"Thank you!" Aiden began, "You should see the garden, it's much better than this old place. I just bought the nicest-"
"No one cares about your flowers, Aiden." Aria, Rose Summer's 10 year old sister, interrupted.
"Can we eat now!" Whined Alex, Rose Summer's 5 year old brother.
"Hold on!" Rose Summer shushed Alex. I don't know how she managed having 4 siblings, being with just my mom was hard enough. "So... Mrs. Miller! How's you're husband?" Rose Summer anxiously asked.
"Oh, he's at home taking care of little Pearl!" Honey's mom replied, getting out her phone to show pictures of the adorable baby.
"Aw, I remember when Rue was that little. She was so cute back then, and much less annoying." My mom added in. I felt my face grew red. I looked over at Jones and her dad, who sat quietly eating. Jones wore the fakest smile I'd ever seen, she was stiff and looked as though she could cry any minute. Her father, not trying to be polite like his daughter, frowned down at the food and muttered things under his breath.
Aiden got up from his seat, "Alright, who wants wine?" Rose Summer looked up at him angrily. "What? I'm saving this god damn party." Aiden left the room and came back with an expensive looking bottle. I actually wanted wine, the one time I couldn't have it. I could tell Jones wanted the same thing, but only Aiden and the adults were old enough.
As wine poured, talk slurred and became more erratic. At one point Rose Summer went to show Jones where the bathroom was. They never returned. I sighed and slumped into my seat. I looked over at Honey who returned my gaze with a friendly smile.
Suddenly, Jones's father got up, "I should get my daughter. We must leave. Thank you for the... meal." He's voice sounded displeased as he went up the stairs calling for Jones.
"Jeez, what's his problem?" Amy asked, as she poured wine into her cup, which Aiden quickly took from her. "Oh come on!" She pleaded with him.
I looked over to my mom, hoping we could leave as well. She ignored my silent pleads and continued chatting with Honey's mother. Rose Summer, Jones, and her father walked down the stairs. Jones looked as though she had been crying as her father pulled her out the door. Rose Summer smiled politely at the rest of us before taking her seat again.
