They hadn't heard from Sam or AJ for hours now. The whole group was reunited in the waiting room — even Mike and Tina had driven there when they received the news that AJ had pretty much passed out during dinner. But, for over three hours, they hadn't heard a word about either of them. Or about about the baby. And everyone was pretty much freaking out.
Santana was pacing around the room while Brittany just sat there, a bit confused, but all too aware of the seriousness of the subject judging by everyone's reactions. Kurt and Blaine were sitting side by side with Kurt doing his best to comfort his boyfriend knowing just how much he was stressing over his best friend as his girlfriend. Beside them, Quinn and Mercedes held hands, quietly praying together for everything to work out. Artie let Kitty sit in his lap as she kept on bouncing her leg up and down, absolutely worried about AJ. Beside them, Mike held Tina in his arms as the woman cried quietly in his chest. Everyone was on the verge of breaking down, but they didn't, choosing to stay strong for one another and for Sam, if that was the case.
It took them another twenty minutes, but as soon as the clock hit 17:46, the doors to the maternity wing of the hospital were opened and a very distraught Sam walked in. Everyone stopped for a second, then, Kitty holding her breath when she noticed Sam's puffy eyes and messy hair as if he had been running a hand through it for a while now. And he only did that when he was nervous and, if he was so stressed, that was a bad sign. That was a horrible, horrible sign.
"Sam..." Blaine was the first to speak up, getting up from his seat beside Kurt to walk up to his best friend, gasping quietly when he fell forward into his arms with a sob. "Oh, Sam... You're okay..."
And that was all it took. Things hadn't gone as expected, they were sure of it now and, as soon as Sam started crying, so did everyone else in the room. Blaine rubbed his best friend's back, hoping to, at least, offer him comfort enough for him to breath properly, but, as he held Sam's shaking body against him, a doctor made her way over to them.
"Are you here for Ms. Sylvester?" She asked, as everyone nodded, Kurt and Mike walking over to the woman as she sent Sam a sorry look.
"No one is actually dead." She said, and, just like that, a weight was lifted off everyone's shoulders but, if they were to judge by Sam's reaction, they knew the good news ended there. "The baby is healthy, all things considered, but he was born 15 days before the due date, so we'll have to keep an eye on him. The reason behind is in unclear since your friend seemed to be very healthy as well, but her body wasn't ready for delivery yet and neither was the baby."
"What... What does that mean?" Quinn frowned, confused.
"The baby wasn't in the position for birth, but, for some reason, Ms. Sylvester's body decided to go into labor." The doctor explained. "Her whole body was working against the two of them so, she crashed. She was unconscious when we got her into the delivery room, so we were forced into making an emergency C-Section. That means, the baby is fine, but your friend... We had to put her under a lot of anesthesia and medication very quickly and she couldn't really process it all. So she... She's struggling to wake up."
"W-Wait..." Santana gasped then. "She's... She's in a coma, or something?"
"Something like that." The doctor nodded. "In reality, she has a chance of waking up soon, but it is a fifty-fifty chance."
"What do we have to do then?" Kurt asked, as Blaine kept his arm around Sam, squeezing him a bit when he finally understood why he had been so distressed.
"Wait." Sam mumbled, as everyone turned to look at him. "We have to wait, right, doctor?"
"Yes." The doctor nodded. "For your friend, she just needs time. As for the baby... He is only slightly premature. He's breathing with the help of a machine and he might need to stay here for a few days, but he's healthy enough. So, if you want to see him..."
