"Are you okay?"
Sam stood by the bed as AJ sat there, at the edge, playing with her fingers a bit. Looking over at her purse that Sam had been holding ever since the two of them had walked into the clinic after leaving work that Friday. Sam sighed, knowing full well what was bothering the woman — after all, he had seen her look over some of the papers Kitty had gathered for her on her options about what to do with the baby before shoving it all in her purse as soon as the nurse had called out her name for the exam.
"AJ... You need to calm down." Sam said gently, stepping closer to the woman as he placed the strag of her bag on his shoulder and grabbed both of her hands with his. "Just breathe for a second, okay? You're gonna end up giving yourself a heart attack."
"I don't think that's how a heart attack actually works, Sam." AJ smiled a bit as the man in front of her chuckled quietly.
"Doesn't mean you don't need to breathe." He smiled, breathing in and out slowly in hopes of getting AJ to copy him. "Come on, babe, just... Take a moment, okay? This is just the first scan. Just to see if everything is okay with the baby. Nothing else, okay? Just take it easy."
"I can't..." AJ shook her head then, as Sam sighed. "Every second I'm awake... I just can't stop thinking about it. About... About what to do with this baby."
"You're gonna drive yourself insane, AJ..." Sam sighed, pulling the woman into his chest as she laid her head there. "Let's take it one step at a time, okay? Let's just hear what the doctor has to say and then we talk more about this, okay?"
"Okay." AJ nodded then. "Okay, yeah, thanks. Thank you for coming."
"I said I'd be here." Sam said simply, smiling at AJ as he took a step back from it. "So I am."
AJ smiled back at him then, but before she could say anything else, the doctor stepped into the room.
"Ms. Sylvester?" He called, as AJ turned to look at the man. "I'm Dr. Sheldon Beiste. I'll be following you in this process, okay? Is this the dad?"
At that, AJ turned to look at Sam and when she noticed the way his eyes lit up at that, she couldn't help but smile.
"Yes." She nodded at Dr. Beiste while trying to fight the stupid smile that formed in her face. "Yes, he's the dad."
"Okay." Dr. Beiste smiled then. "Just lay down, Ms. Sylvester, and roll your shirt up so we can see that baby in there, huh?"
At that, AJ tensed up again so, jumping into action, Sam was quick to reach a hand over to AJ and run it over her arm a bit.
"Come on, babe..." He whispered, helping her to scoot back into the bed. "Lay down."
And so she did, laying down on the bed and pulling up her shirt and her pants down a little bit.
"It'll be a bit cold, okay?" Dr. Beiste asked as AJ nodded, wincing quietly when the gel hit her belly. Dr. Beiste laughed. "Told ya."
AJ smiled then, but she was still visibly nervous. Looking over at the screen where her baby was supposed to appear, she felt a lump in her throat, so she turned to look the other way, at Sam, instead.
"Sam?" She called, as he looked down at her. "Can I hold your hand?"
Sam softened then, nodding his head as he gripped AJ's hand in his. And for the next few seconds, the two of them stayed like that, looking into each other's eyes as Sam held one of AJ's hands and squeezed it in his a bit, causing the woman to smile.
"Well, looks like everything is in order." Dr. Beiste said, as Sam and AJ broke from their little moment to look at the doctor instead. "Four weeks, is that right?"
