Chapter 28: Detective Cassidy
In their classes, they were expected to know nonverbal spells. To Roxy, this was no problem at all, and Draco found it quite easy. Others, however, found it difficult, and she caught most of the students muttering the spells under their breath. Whenever they had a free period, Draco and Roxy would make up some excuse and hurry off to the Room of Requirement to continue fixing the Vanishing Cabinet. It was even trickier than they'd imagined.
Daphne and Jade seemed quite oblivious to it all, but Cassidy, however, was more watchful. One morning, before the other two were awake, she spoke to Roxy.
"I don't mean to pry, but you and Malfoy, huh?"
"What?" exclaimed Roxy quickly. There was a smirk ghosting her best friend's lips.
"Don't think I haven't noticed, Roxy. Maybe Daph and Jade are quite wrapped up in whatever it is sixth year brings, but I've seen. You and Draco disappear away together for prolonged periods of time. You always make up some excuse or another, then vanish and I don't see you for quite a while. Sometimes you're late to classes, and the two of you look flustered. You never had a stray hair out of place, but recently your hair isn't as immaculate as it was in fifth year." Cassidy finished her speech with a triumphant air, as if she'd just solved a difficult case.
Roxy gawked at her.
"No, Cass, you've got it all wrong," she said at last. There was no way Cass was going to jump to conclusions like that. Roxy desperately tried to find some way to explain to her without actually telling her the truth. "Draco and I are done. I need to make that clear. We're not going off together to do...whatever it is you have in mind. I don't even want to think about it. There's nothing happening between us. I'm being serious. We're nothing more than friends, ok?" Cassidy studied her carefully. Roxy squinted under her scrutinising gaze. Then Cass said finally:
"Alright, I believe you're telling the truth. So tell me, why is it that you're doing the things I've listed above? It seems strangely out of character for you." Roxy raised an eyebrow.
"You notice that much?" Cass shrugged.
"I notice more than most people think. I just tend to not mention it, but my curiosity is overwhelming for this one. So?" Roxy sighed, trying to decide how she was going to talk her way out of this one.
Oh, nothing really. Just that I was told over the summer I'm actually the daughter of Lord freaking Voldemort and my mother, who was descended from Morgan le Fay, by the way, vanished when I was young. My father's planning on the two of us ruling the world in his evil fashion. Draco's fixing a Vanishing Cabinet and I'm helping him, whether my father likes it or not, and he has to assassinate Dumbledore by the end of the year. Oh, and by the way, he's a Death Eater now, and I was trained to kill by none other than Bellatrix Lestrange and Antonin Dolohov over the summer. That's all. Nothing particular. Just your normal sixth year.
Instead, Roxy mustered a smile -she had become quite good at that- and replied,
"There's something we're working on together. A...project of sorts. I'm not exactly supposed to be doing it with him, but I'm just helping Draco." Vaguely the truth.
"May I know what it is?"
"Afraid not. It's not my secret to tell, but I guess you'll find out soon enough."
"If you say so," Cassidy sighed.
"Is your curiosity satisfied now?" Roxy asked snidely.
"If anything, it's piqued more than ever," chuckled Cassidy.
There was a yawn and a rustle of bedsheets.
"Whatever are you two early birds mumbling about?" mumbled a sleepy Jade.
"Nothing," Roxy said at once, not wanting another encounter. Cassidy glanced quizzically at her before nodding.
"Well, maybe don't wake us up next time. Oh my, I've overslept!" Daphne leapt out of bed, and their normal morning routine continued.

"I can't come here as often anymore," said Roxy apologetically.
"Why not?" Draco asked absent-mindedly, leafing through a book on fixing magical objects as the two of them sat in the Room of Requirement, "Listen here, Roxy: 'The art of fixing magical items is, indeed, extraordinarily difficult based on what kind of object it is. Different things have different methods you must use, and those vary.' And then the paragraph stops there. I mean, why put it in if you're not going to explain exactly what methods there are? Useless piece of rubbish."
"Right," said Roxy, distracted.
"So, what were you going to say?" Draco asked, already reading the next chapter of the book.
"Well, Cassidy has gone and become Detective I'm-Going-To-Nose-Around-In-Other-People's-Business, and she suspects something's up with the two of us," sighed Roxy. At this, Draco finally looked up, his attention diverted.
"What?" he exclaimed fretfully. She saw a sweat break out across his pale forehead, "You don't mean she's -what did you say?"
"Relax," Roxy rolled her eyes, "I obviously didn't actually tell her the truth. I just said I'm helping you with a project of sorts." Draco leaned his head against the back of the couch.
"Oh. For a moment I thought..." he shook his head, "Well, I guess that's our sign to be careful. Theo has been throwing me odd looks too. I guess I should've anticipated it, what with him being the genius and all, but I supposed he would be too caught up in the studies of sixth year...Blaise is as oblivious as always, so I guess that's good, but he's been disappearing more lately too..." His forehead creased in thought.
"Come to think of it, Jade's been vanishing too," Roxy frowned. The two of them stared at each other.
"You don't think-" they began at the same time, then groaned.
"Of course. Blaise and Jade."
Who would've guessed.
A/N: Anyways, ship names for Blaise and Jade? I mean, they actually fit together, you know. And Jade doesn't date blondes, haha. Comment what you think their ship name should be. I was thinking Jaise or Blade. Also, I'm really excited because I have A LOT of action planned out for later chapters, but I'm returning to school this Monday, so idk if I can post that much.
