Chapter 32

Who knew after five years had passed I am now officially a doctor. I thought I would pursue the psychology field turns out I fell in love more in becoming a veterinarian. I fell in love with animals when we had our semester break on Africa. It took some months and years to change my specialization. I'm glad it all worked out in the end.

"Goodmorning Dra. Soriano, I heard you're going back to the Philippines. How saddening it is, You're one of the best doctors at the psychology field then you transfered to the veterinary field. I just hope that we had more interactions than before and practice your undeniably good skills here." Our senior doctors here praising me, am I dreaming or is this even part of the reality.

I was blushing, I never really expect such compliment. I never looked myself as the best, I always think the others were better than me even though I'm excelling academically during my intern years.

"Yes, it is a bit saddening to say but I'm leaving for good. The animals in the Philippines deserves more care and value than here. Not a lot of veterinarians are protecting rights for the animals." I was preaching hard for it.

They look desperate and wants me to stay. I already made up my mind. The Philippines is my original hometown, I wanted to serve my country first before anything else. "Are you sure? I really do hope you will change your mind."

"I am so sorry, I'm not gonna change my mind anymore. My decision is final, I hope you'll find a great doctor soon." I shook hands with them and I praised them for being my mentors not just in my doctoral life but my personal life as well.

I'm now saying my goodbyes to all my colleagues and friends. Some of them were crying real hard. I couldn't help but to shed tears as well. "I'm so happy to be able to embark this journey with you all, I hope all of you will be able to achieve your dreams. See you soon and I'm gonna miss each and everyone of you."

We are all hugging and crying, some of the staff from my internship hospital send off some flowers and farewell gifts. "I couldn't help but not to stop crying, you're all so sweet."

After the short farewell party they threw, I am now at our apartment. Mom was already in the Philippines by now. Sabi ko sa kanya susunod na lang ako at madami pa akong aabyarin. She gladly followed, miss na miss na rin naman niya ang Pilipinas.

I was packing my stuff, looking around my room and the whole apartment. Grabe, who knew five years would pass by so fast. Parang kelan lang nasa Texas ako at nag-aaral ng psychology tapos ngayon ganap na doctor na ako. Sobrang mamimiss ko ang lugar na to, nakita ng apartment na ito ang lahat ng hirap na dinanas ko.

"I'll miss this place, you've seen me struggle to reach for my dreams. I'm sad to leave but a better tomorrow is waiting for me." I carefully packed my stuff, I called my mom and told her I'm ready to leave the apartment.

I put the rest of my baggage at the back of the car. I saw how empty and sad our apartment looked like. I was holding the keys and saw our landlady Mrs. Terra, she's a widow with lot dogs. Probably, one of the reasons I became a veterinarian is because of her. She would always let me babysit her dogs, I would take care of them everytime she leaves town.

I saw her today carrying one of her poodles outside, she saw me closing the door of my car and I walk towards her. She was looking at me with sad eyes, I handed her the keys. "Me and my mom would always be grateful to you for allowing us to stay here for awhile. I'm gonna miss you big time especially the dogs."
