Ryan
(Summer 2006)

About an hour later the guys had gone off somewhere into the woods. I didn't really feel like exploring today so I climbed up the ladder to the treehouse the girls were sat on. We'd started hanging out with them since Puck declared that girls were actually alright. Pucks been pretty obsessed over Santana and Finn has a not so secret crush on Quinn. I mean I'm pretty sure Quinn herself knows about it. But she never gives him the time of day. Which me and Puck never let up about. At every given chance we tease him over it.

Obviously Finn and I have known each other since forever, we met Puck in kindergarten and then Brittany and Santana in first grade. But Quinn came to the school the first year of middle school about two years ago. She'd moved here from somewhere beginning with F, I think. I can never remember the town. She doesn't really talk about it all that much. The girls had befriended her on the first day and brought her to lunch to meet us and the rest was history really.

Thirteen was a funny sort of age. Everything was starting to change. The group dynamic was different. We were all going through puberty, which I really wasn't a fan of right now. But it was good. Things were good here. Now I have to go through all this without my friends and in a strange new place I'm not used to.

"Hey Ryan" Britt said to me as she saw me coming up stairs and up through the hatch.

"Hey Britts" I greeted and sat down in between Santana and Quinn.

"Wassup Hastings!" Santana said with a smirk. "Doubt you're too thrilled about this move then" She stated rather than asked.

"Far from it." I said shaking my head.

"How come you have to move?" Quinn asked from beside me. I turned to look at her. It was the first thing I'd heard her say since I'd gotten here today. She's normally a lot louder than that. Well slightly less loud than Santana, but louder than Britt anyway.

"My dad's work." I said and she just looked blankly back at me. "He's got a new job out there, some promotion or something, so we all have to follow."

"Well it sucks" Santana said.

"Yeah but it might not be so bad" Britt said. Always the optimist. I appreciated that the girls were trying to make me feel better. But it still sucked.

"Well anyway, I need to head back home." Santana stated "Papi's got a night off from work," She said standing. "You coming Britt?" She asked and Britt looked up and smiled, also standing. Those two are attached at the hip I swear. Wherever one goes the other follows.

"Sure Sanny" She said smiling happily at Santana.

"You coming Q?" She asked Quinn. I looked at Santana and she was giving Quinn some sort of pointed look. She then looked at me, so I looked at Quinn who looked like a deer caught in headlights. What the hell is going on?

"I think I'm gonna stay here with the guys for a little while" She said finally and gave me a small smile "If thats cool with you?" she asked me. I didn't mind.

"I have no idea where Puck and Finn are. So I could use the company." I said with a smile.

"Okay suit yourself" Santana said like it didn't bother her, but I was confused at the look on her face where she was wearing a slight smirk. Santana's tell tell sign that she's up to something. What exactly... beats me. In turn they went down the ladder and walked off through the trees, back out through Finn's backyard.

A comfortable silence fell between Quinn and I.

"Do you remember the first time we met" I heard out of nowhere, from next to me. Quinn was playing absentmindedly with the wood beneath her. Tracing the groves between the planks with her finger. I smiled at her question, remembering it all too well.
