Chapter 25: Birthday Party
Everything that happened after my not-so-good conversation with Shone seemed to be a blur. When Shone left my room, his words echoed in the silence. I sat on my bed and stared at the crumpled part of the mattress, the only trace of Shone's presence in my room. A sudden surge of mixed emotions shook every nerve, every muscle in my body. It was so immense that I had a hard time breathing.
I just sat there, mind clouded with tangled thoughts. I just can't believe what happened. Like did that really happen? Did I really said those shits to Shone? Did we just fight? I don't know. I don't know anymore.
The day dragged by without me noticing it. When Motchi went in my room earlier this morning, I told him to give me some time to prepare for school. He then left but I can't make myself move. I was just sitting there the whole moment until Motchi came knocking at my door again. Napilitan tuloy akong gumalaw at gawin ang morning routine ko.
It took a huge amount of effort to dragged myself out of my room and head downstairs to find Mom and Motchi sitting on the chairs around the large, rectangular, wooden dining table.
I was surprised seeing her sitting there, wearing her usual uniform, smiling like everything's alright. I was relieved that she made it home safe. The worry about her being inside the West Nexus Amusement Park alone last night suddenly subsided.
But then I began to wonder, did she find Dad? What happened out there? Did she manage to find out something regarding my father?
I tried to scan Mom's expression, hoping to see any hint about what might happened last night but I saw nothing more than her genuine smile.
I pushed the questions deep down my mind and let them go for awhile. I decided to ask her later today if I have the chance to. I want to talk to her in private and Motchi was still young to be involved with the issue at hand. Kelangan ko rin munang mag'ipon ng lakas ng loob para handa ako sa ano mang pwedeng maging sagot niya sa aking mga katanungan.
They noticed me standing there and they both greeted me with a smile. I found myself smiling back but it fell short when I noticed the empty chair next to Motchi.
Shone wasn't there.
A wave of guilt made its way inside my chest. Then everything seemed to blur again.
As I've mentioned, hindi na ako aware sa mga sumunod na nangyare. I went to school but I didn't even remember how I got there. I went to our classroom and found my bestfriend and classmates there. Nia was excited to see me and she started telling me things.
"I missed you, babe! I'm glad you're back because you won't believe this but yesterday was a blast---" she started talking with enthusiasm.
I looked at Nia and tried to listen to her update about the past quizzes I've missed and the recent announcements in school. I heard her said stuffs but I found it really hard to pay attention. If Nia noticed it, she didn't have the chance to ask me because the class immediately started.
I sat there on my chair, my eyes were focused up-front, trying to pretend I was listening to my teachers. Pero wala, my thoughts were always coming back to Shone and our conversation this morning. Heck, I felt like a bitch for acting that way in front of him.
I'm starting to regret it.
My mind floated every which way the rest of the morning. The bell rang, lunch break finally came. When Nia turned to me and gave me the investigator look I thought, Uh-oh. That only meant one thing, she have a series of questions in her mind and I have no choice but to answer.
So when we put down our trays on the empty table inside the cafeteria and sat on the vacant chairs, Nia started throwing questions at me.
"So, what's up?" she asked for starters. Her round charcoal eyes sparked underneath her eyeglasses.
