"Thank you." The barista smiled warmly as Layton paid for the coffees he ordered. After a long day of work, he figured it wouldn't hurt to go to the cafe to get a coffee for himself; in the matter of fact, he had gotten drinks for almost all of his family: Audrey, Blake, and his dad.
He couldn't help but take notice of Isaac's presence in the cafe. He quickly came to recognize him as that one boy that Audrey had brought over to their house and helped, as well as that boy that his son had an odd attachment to. He noticed that he also happened to be with another boy, one that was older than him but younger than Layton, he looked like he was in his late teens or early 20s. As if things couldn't get any more confusing for Lay, Isaac was flirting with one of the baristas?
What? I thought he and Audrey had something.
Layton thought, but he just went on with his business, until like plenty of the others customers, not so later he had gotten his attention back to Isaac and the guy with him when a group guys had walked up to their table.
He couldn't help but eavesdrop, which wasn't too hard since he had sharp hearing. He ended up overhearing about how one of those guys was angry with Isaac's friend for killing their father, but later on both Isaac's friend and those guys had left the cafe. He also noticed that Isaac and the guy had left their food behind, so he picked it up from the table and took it with him as he walked out of the cafe, figuring that maybe he can give it to them but first he was going to follow Isaac. Why? He just had this strong feeling to.
"Houston!" He said to the chauffeur as he got in the car.
"Follow that kid with the blonde hair."
Houston nodded.
~
"Damn it." Layton cursed when they were stopped by traffic.
"I'm sorry Mr. Carter, I hope we don't lose him because of this."
Layton stared at the window impatiently as he waited along with other vehicles for a whole bunch of pedestrians to walk.
After a few minutes, losing patience Layton honked at the other cars, the other cars honking back.
"You guys don't understand, I'm after this kid, and if you guys don't hurry it up soon I'm going to lose him." He sighed frustrated.
"Guess we should just drive home, we probably lost him by-"
"No, sir we have a chance." Houston pointed out as their road was finally cleared.
Driving on full speed, Houston drove after Isaac, or at least where he figured they last saw him go.
Once they made it to a corner near a hair salon, they beeped to get the attention of a man.
"Excuse me, did you happen to see this kid pass by?" Fortunately for Layton, he had a picture reference of Isaac, one that Audrey had shared with him that Isaac and Blake had taken. He didn't know Isaac that well but he had to admit he admired how his son had such a strong liking towards him.
"Yes, he went that way." The man pointed at the direction.
"Thank you." Layton thanked, before they continued to drive and made their way to the directions they were given.
~
"Do you need further assistance?" Houston asked when they got to an alley.
Layton shook his head.
"No."
"Are you sure sir? Looks dangerous to go there."
As someone who had been serving for the army for a while and seen at all, Layton just chuckled in response.
"I got this, I just need to check on that Isaac kid. Just stay in here with the drinks I'll be back."
Houston nodded before closing the car door after Layton hopped out of the car and walked into the alley.
"Chase, stop!" He heard Isaac shout as his friend sliced one of the guys wrists. He seemed angry as hell, and willing as hell to murder the guy then and there.
"Please just fucking stop, think about Jonas. Think about Emma." Isaac practically sobbed.
It almost was enough to break Layton's heart when he heard the loudest cry ever come out of Isaac when his friend had gotten stabbed. It was almost even surprising to see the boy in such an emotional state, since it seemed like the Isaac that Audrey introduced him to had no emotions. The cry was so loud that dogs that were blocks away started howling.
"See what you made me do? Your friend is dead now." One of them said as Isaac just stared in horror. Isaac was too busy crying to even realize or even care when the gang threatened to take his life away.
"If you want to take my life away, do that then!" He spat out as he squirmed.
"You're- you're not afraid to die?"
"You already took his life away. When he did nothing wrong and you know it!"
When he was away from their sight, Layton quickly called Houston. He waited impatiently for him to pick up his call.
"Houston, call 911." He urged.
