Chapter 10 - Phone Call

It was a rough morning, barely entering the first semester, and we're running late.
"God damn it. Come on!" I hollered loudly, locking my car as we ran towards the school. We ran up the stairs and split to our respective classes, trying not to spill our coffees. I eventually got to the hallway where my classroom was and sprayed myself with some perfume before entering.
"Hi, I'm sorry I'm l--"
"Good morning, Jade. Nice of you to join us." The professor interjected with a kind smile before motioning for me to take a seat. "Since you're late, you'll have to stay a few minutes more after class with some of your classmates who are late to write down some notes you've missed."
I nodded, but groaned internally because that would mean that my break would have to be a few minutes shorter. Dipping my hand in my bag that was on the floor beside me, I grabbed my notebook and a pen and quickly took notes about whatever we were talking about in Ear Training. My phone buzzed constantly in my jacket pocket, but I didn't bother to answer or check because I wasn't in the mood to get in trouble with the teacher. It's not like they can give me detention, but I was interested in this lesson anyway so it would've been a waste of time to look at my phone.

"Hey Jade, what took you so long?" Beck asked once he spotted me walking towards the lunch table with food in hand.
"Ugh, we came late, so Mister Hayward held me back a bit to copy down some notes I missed." I responded with distaste before sitting down beside Robbie and digging into my food.
"I see," Robbie turned back to everyone and continued his previous sentence before Beck and I interrupted. "So, as I was saying, I met the nicest girl from New School and she's gorgeous and she didn't make fun of me or anything."
"Really?" Tori asked with interest.
"Not even with your puppet?" I chimed in monotonously, chewing on my salad.
"Rex is not a puppet!" He defended, making me roll my eyes. "Anyway, yes, she did not make fun of me at all. We drank a few beers and ended up talking the whole time after you girls sang."
"Way to go, Rob! When are you meeting this girl again?" Andre asked with an interested tone to match his smile.
"Well, she asked me out to go to the movies on Saturday, and maybe get some food afterwards." Robbie explained.
"I'm happy for you, Robbie." Tori reassured with a smile. I was honestly very happy that Robbie was connecting with another potentially-weird girl and getting his shit together, and I was secretly hoping that maybe when I got a job like Robbie did, Babe would be a bit more chill and I could take her on more fun dates like this.

"You got plans tonight, Jade?" Cat asked, happily twirling beside me like a ballerina since she was also taking dance.
"I--" My phone ringing interrupted me, so I picked it up. "Gimme one sec, hello?"
"Hey babe, so I'm deciding onndinner for us for tonight. Do you wanna eat in or go out?" Babe asked nonchalantly.
"Babe, I'm not coming over. I meant what I said." I sighed, bringing a hand up to my pocket to retrieve my car keys.
"What? I thought you were kidding! "
"No, family comes first. So, it's either you come or don't." I explained sternly.
"Fine, do whatever you want. You always do anyways." She muttered before hanging up. I sighed loudly in a stressful manner before turning towards to Andre, Cat and Tori.
"What's up, Jade?" Andre asked with a worried look on his face.
"It's nothing, I'll meet you at the cafe." I replied, giving a small reassuring nod before he walked over to his car and prepared to go to our planned destination. Sam has pulled up to the curb in front of my car with her bike and pulled out Cat's pink helmet.
"Hey Sam." I greeted coolly before picking out a cigarette from my pack and lighting it up.
"Hey, what's up, gals?" She grinned before giving Cat a light kiss and handing her the helmet.
"Not much, we're pretty much on our way home. It's been a bit of a dull day." Tori answered.
"Boo. I'd love to keep this chat ongoing, but mama's hungry for some ribs." Sam stated with a cheeky smile.
"Seriously, Jade, if you've got nothing planned later, you can come over or something. Just call me!" Cat mentioned  with a bubbly giggle before getting on the bike with Sam.
I watched as they drove off down the main road, wondering if other people saw Babe and I like that.
" Come on, let's go. "Tori muttered, taking her eyes off the couple and getting in my car.
" Right. "I threw the remaining two puffs of a cigarette and got in my car, setting my bag down in the backseat over my shoulder and mounting my phone up, having it connect to the speakers. Get You by Daniel Caesar and Kali Uchis started to play as I made my way down the road. Tori put on her sunglasses and bopped her head up and down to the song before singing along to the song quietly.
"Through drought and famine, natural disaster," Tori started quietly.
"My baby has been around for me." I continued, drumming my finger on the steering wheel to the beat. Checking my side mirrors, I noticed her smile and continue to sing. "Kingdoms have fallen, angels be callin', none of that could ever make me leave!" She sang loudly, making me smile. I laughed and turned the window down, wanting to enjoy the feeling of the wind on my skin.
"Come on, Jade! Sing with me! Every time I look into your eyes I see it! You're all I need!" She shouted happily, just feeling the song and not caring whether she was loud or not.
"Ooh, who would've thought I'd get you." I sang along, rolling my eyes slight. Tori and I harmonised for the rest of the song, not caring about anyone who drove beside us seeing us sing like a bunch of crazies.
"I missed singing with you, you have no idea." She gushed, leaning her head back.
"I missed singing with you, too." I whispered, loud enough for only me to hear. "Anyway, I was wondering if you were free tonight." I started loudly to her.
"What? Why? Yeah, I'm free." She questioned, sitting up from her seat.
"Well, my parents are having this dinner thing and I was wondering if you'd like to come." My grip on the steering wheel, nervously awaiting for her answer.
"Uhm, yeah. I'd love to come." She answered with a smile.
"Cool, I'll pick you up at 7, then." I answered, giving her a small smile.

"Mom, Dad, I'm home." I called out, leaving my keys by the door. The sound of Ice running out from the living room echoed through the hall.
"Hey, darling. We're in the living room." My Mom called out. I walked through the hall and made a small turn to the living room. My parents were on the couch watching television, cuddling mindlessly as one watched TV and the other was eating an apple.
"How was your day at school?" Jacob asked, switching the channel.
"Oh, it was fine. Same as usual. Say, what time are we going tonight?" I asked.
"Around 8, we should be meeting Petra and George at the Hudson Trattoria, is Babe gonna meet us there?" My Mom asked, picking at a bag of Flaming Hot Cheetos.
"Mom, aren't you gonna have some lunch instead?" I questioned, bending down to pick up my growing dog.
"Nope. This restaurant is rather expensive, so I'm not gonna leave anything on that plate." My Mom said, showing off that bright smile she has that always fills her patients and myself with so much hope and warmth. I nodded and walked over to the kitchen, leaving my bag on the island.
I left Ice down on the floor and walked around making myself a sandwich before making my way up to my room. I left my stuff on my bed, and quickly picked out an outfit for tonight before walking out and into my little studio to work on some music and try out some things I learnt in Studio at school.
Opening up the lights, I was greeted with my half-way done set-up and lots of boxes in the corner that had other consoles, microphones, my MIDIs and other little things. I rolled my eyes and groaned in annoyance then opened up the computer before holding onto the rest of the my sandwich with my teeth. I walked around my computer, opening up my monitors then quickly got on Spotify and clicked on shuffle. Instead of working on my music, I decided to get the job done with these boxes and finally open them up and unpack them. Ice sat on the couch that was behind my chair at the computer and laid his head on the arm rest.
"Good boy, Ice." I whispered, giving him a quick pat on the head. The exacto knife glared against the light before I cut open a few boxes. I got on the floor and started to take out one item at a time from the box, carefully examining their condition since they weren't all shipped with mecand had to be shipped here with a crappy moving company. I admired my MIDI collection as they slowly pulled in the corner and reexperienced the affinity I had for my different microphones that suited unique voices differently.
My fingers blindly skimmed across a small, cold item. It was smooth, and cold, left at the bottom of the box. I slowly reached into the box to comfortably be able to get it, then I brought it up to my face.
It was my old phone.
"I thought I left you back home." I whispered to myself. I carefully examined the clean screen that had little to no scratches, as well as the outdated phone cover that had little scissors drawn on them in comic style. Curiosity got the best of me, so I clicked on the power button and there it was. The pear glowed in my dimly lit studio and made a twinkling sound, signaling that it's turned on. I was surprised it turned on and was working after the entire summer of being here. A smile formed on my face as I decided to reread what I had sent to Tori back then. My fingers worked fast, looking at the text messages.

'You know me, but you don't. I go to school with you, and we're technically friends, but I kinda don't like you. Anyways, you're probably asleep and will probably never read this because it's a new number and you probably block the unknown numbers from your phone, but I just needed someone to talk to. I'm sad. My parents split, and I've split with my boyfriend. I live with my mom though. Anyways, my mom started dating this guy named Jacob, and I couldn't handle seeing him kinda taking my dad's place. It sucks, you know? Just, ignore this. Good night. -J'

I cringed, but also felt my heart flutter after reading all the messages I had sent her which were all funnily enough, sent around three in the morning. This feeling felt new after not feeling it for so long. My stomach was tied in knots, but I pushed those away forcefully, thinking that maybe things were getting rough between Babe and I because she's been busy with Game Shakers and I had school to focus on. However, turning back to my phone, what I saw made my blood run cold and made me drop my phone.

'Incoming Call : Dad'
